IMPROVEMENT IN ORNAMENTAL HAT-TIPS.
Specilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,309, dated January 13, 1874; application filed April 30, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs W. BRACHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamenting the Interior of Hats and Gaps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying `drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a face view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the same partly in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same in the plane .r Fig. l.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an ornament made of paper or other suitable material, and sevcured to the interior of a hat or cap by paste or other cement, its position being strengthened by a backing piece, the contours of which are the same, or nearly so, as those of the or nament, in such a manner that, in bending thetip, thebacking piece prevents the edge of the ornament from becoming detached. The connection between the ornament and the backing piece is increased by perforations in that portion of the tip which is situated between said ornament and the backing piece. With the ornament is combined a serrated border, made of one or more pieces of paper, and in one or more colors. A
In the drawing, the letter A designates an ornament which is by preference made of paper, but which may be made of metal foil, or of any other suitable material, and which is embellished by a picture in one or more colors, or by impressions of any desired nature. This ornament is fastened to the tip B by means of paste or any other suitable cement, and on the back of said tip is cemented abacking piece, C, Fig. 2 and 3, the contours of which correspond exactly, or nearly so, with those of the ornament, and which is placed exactly beneath said ornament. If no such backing piece is used, the tip, which is generally made of satin or other very flexible and soft material, on being bent, is liable to scale olf, beginning at the edges of the ornament A, and in many cases the 4ornaments drop oli entirely. By the application of the backing piece, the scaling olf of the tip at the edges of the ornament is effectually prevented, since said tip, when being bent down, is sustained by the backing pieces, and not allowed to detach itself from the ornament at any part of its edge. The connection between the backing piece C and the ornament A is strengthened by providing that portion of the tip which is situated between the ornament and the backing piece with perforations a., (see Fig. 2,) so that, when the backing piece is glued on, some parts of it will adhere directly to the inner surface of the ornament. With the ornament A is combined a serrated border, D, which is made of oneor more pieces of paper in one or more colors, and which projects beyond the edge of the ornament, as shown in Fig. 1, imparting to the same a novel and distinguished appearance. Said border, when glued down on the tip, also increases the connection between the tip and the ornament. The body of the serrated border maybe made to cover the entire 4inner surface of the ornament, or it may be cut out, so that the orna-` ment, on being glued down upon the tip, will come in direct contact with the latter. By making the points of the serrated border of dilierent colors alternating with each other, the appearance of the ornament may be still further improved.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the tip B and ornament A, of a backing piece, C, the contour of which corresponds with that of the ornament, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
2. The arrangement of perforations in that portion of the tip which is situated between the ornament A and the backing piece C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with an ornament, A, and tip B, of a serrated border, D, made of one or more pieces of paper, and in one or more colors, substantially as shown anddescribed.
