' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FAN Clarence B. James, Watsonville, Calif.
Application November 28, 1933, Serial No. 700,124 2 Claims. (01. 230-266) This invention relates to fans and more particularly to an improved type of hand operated fan.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved type of fan which is constructed to conveniently fit in the hand of the user and includes means to prevent breaking or bending of the material of which the fan is constructed.
Another object of this invention is to provide a moisture resisting handle which is mounted on a fan of this type, the handle also reinforcing the body of the fan so as to prevent breaking of the fan during the using thereof.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line' 22 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the views, the numeral lll designates generally a blade which is made out of a flat sheet of material, preferably material having a degree of flexibility such as cardboard, pressed material or the like.
In the present instance, the blade [0 has been constructed of cardboard and is constructed with any suitable marginal configuration but, in the present instance, has been constructed with the opposite edges H rounded, although the body Ill may have any desired marginal configuration.
A handle structure, generally designated as I2, is made integral with the blade I0 and, in the present instance, is relatively shorter in length than the width of the blade Ill. The handle [2 comprises a roll l3 which is integral with a stem portion or shank [4. This roll I3 is of a diameter sufficient to conveniently rest in the hand of the user.
A looped strip of material, generally designated as I5, engages about the roll [3, and this strip l5 comprises blade engaging portions I6, and a loop I! which engages about the roll [3 and the stem I4. The blade engaging portions [6 are secured on opposite sides of the blade Ill by means of clips, staples or fastening members l8.
In the present instance, this reinforcing member I5 is constructed of celluloid or other composition material which is preferably impervious to moisture and which has a degree of flexibility, while at the same time having a degree of rigidity so that the blade engaging portion IE will pre-.
vent bending of the blade l0 adjacent the lower edge thereof.
In the use of this device, the handle comprising the roll I3 and the loop I! is adapted to be disposed in the hand with the loop I! engaging 5 in the palm of the hand and the fingers of the hand engaging on one side of the flat portion IS with the thumb engaging partially about the loop I7 and partially engaging the flat portion [6 on the side opposite from that portion engaged by w the fingers. The opposite sides or faces of the blade Ill may have any desired indicia such as advertising or the like disposed thereon and the blade Ill, as well as the handle, may be suitably colored so as to present a pleasing appearance. is
It will be apparent from the foregoing that a hand operated fan has been disclosed which eliminates the wooden handle such as at present in use in fans which are made out of a fiat piece of cardboard. Due to the nonmoisture absorb- 20 ing capacity of the reinforcing member [5, the handle of the device will not be injured from moisture in the hand of the user of the device, and by using material such as celluloid or the like, the handle can be readily cleansed. 25
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in thev details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes 30 and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:-
1. A fan as set forth comprising a relatively fiat blade, a reduced stem portion carried by the 35 blade, a roll integral with the stem portion, a looped moisture resisting member surrounding the roll, blade engaging portions integral with the loop and engaging on opposite sides of the blade and on opposite sides of said stem portion, 40 and fastening means engaging the blade engaging portions for securing said blade engaging portions in a fixed position on opposite sides of the blade.
2. A fan as set forth, comprising a relatively 45 flat blade, a relatively narrow stem portion integral with the blade, a roll integral with the stem portion and comprising at least one complete turn of the material comprising the roll, a looped moisture resisting member surrounding the roll, blade engaging portions integral with the loop and engaging on opposite sides of the blade and on opposite sides of said stem portion, and fastening means engaging said blade engaging portions for' securing said blade engaging portions in a fixed position on opposite sides of the blade and of the stem portion.
