MCCLEL- rox, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Everett, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, (whose postofiice address is 159 Beach-am street, Everett, JMassachusetts,) have invented. an Improvement in Corrugated FireBoxes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like 4characters on the dra.

This invention relates to fire-boxes for locomotive or other boilers, and among other objects, provides a wall having an eX- tended surface flexible to conform to temperature changes in the fire-box without injury thereto.
The character of the invention may be best understood by reference to the following description of an illustrative embodi ment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section through an illustrative fire-box embodying the invention looking in the direction. of the Huesheet; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the broken line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of a modification to be referred to.
Referring to the drawing, the illustrative fire-box shown therein as embodying the invention comprises side walls, each including outer and inner plates 5 and 7 having corrugations running yin different directions. Preferably the corrugations of the inner plate are substantially upright or vertically disposed, whereas those of the outer plate are substantially horizontally disposed.

The lower ends of the walls may be closed by asuitable mud-ring 11 herein interposed between the outer and inner plates of the walls and secured between them by suitable through bolts 18.
A suitable flue sheet 15 is provided and connected to the barrel of the boiler 17 in any suitable manner. To connect the side walls with the flue sheet the inner plates of the latter are extended (Fig. 2) and bent Specification of Letters Patent.

outwardly to present long flanges 19 which may be riveted to said flue sheet and also to short flanges 21 of said outer plates overlapping said long flanges.
The crown comprises a plurality of drums herein including side drums 23 and an intermediate drum 25, said drums being riveted or otherwise secured to one another and communicating through nipples 27 expanded in the contacting sides thereof.
The upper ends of the side walls are bent to meet one another, overlap the crown side drums and are riveted or otherwise secured to one another and to said drums.
To provide communication between the drums and side walls and permit the water to circulate readily from said side walls up into said drums, nipples 29 are expanded in apertures in said drums and the inner plates of said side walls.
The crown drums are entered through apertures in said flue sheet and riveted to iianges 31 thereof surrounding said aper tures and extending away from the interior of the fire-box. Thus there is a free circulation of water to and from the crown drums and the barrel of the boiler.
The intermediate drum and the side drums have contacting walls 33 liattened to permit the water to drop nearly to the bottoms of said drums without exposing under non-contacting surfaces thereof to the fire.
To provide material 35 of suihcient strength between the flue sheet apertures receiving the crown drums, the portions of the latter entering said apertures may be flattened as at 37 to leave substantial spaces between said apertures.
To receive steam from the intermediate crown drum and conduct the same to the barrel of the boiler` there is provided an upper drum 39 nippled to said intermediate drum and having a head 41 riveted to said flue sheet, and nippled thereto to provide communication from said drum through said flue sheet to said barrel.
In Fig. 1 the outer and inner plates of the side walls were shown as overlapping.
1n Fig. 3 is disclosed a modification in which the outer plates are secured directly to the drums. The inner plates are somewhat shorter, are bent inwardly to conform to the contours of the drums and are riveted thereto as at 43. In this case nipples are not used to provide communication between the drums and side walls, but the communication is had through apertures 45 in said drums.
The drums, being of general cylindrical shape, will be capable of more or less flex-v ion, and the corrugations of the side wall plates will also be capable of considerable flexion, enabling them to respond to temperature changes without unduly stressing the tire-box.
The steam generating etliciency of a corrugated plate is greater than that of a flat plate since the total area of heating surface aiiorded by a corrugated plate is considerably greater than that of a flat plate.
The corrugations of the outer and inner plates, in running different directions, reinforce one another and provide a wall which will be structurally strong and capable of standing the rack and tear such as locomotive fire-boxes are necessarily subject to, and at the same time will be responsive to temperature changes Without unduly stressing the wall.
Having described one embodiment of the invention without limiting the same thereto, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a tire-box, the combination of a wall comprising opposed corrugated plates, one having vertical and the other having horizontal corrugations. Y
2; In a ire-boX, the combination of a wall comprising opposed plates, one having corrugations running in one direction and the other having corrugations running in a dif* ferent direction.
3. In a fire-box, the combination of'a wall comprising outer and inner plates, one having corrugations running in one direction and the other having corrugations running a dilierent direction; and means for securing said plates in spaced relation.
4L. ln a lire-box, the combination of a wall comprising inner and outer plates, the inner having substantially vertical corrugations and' the outer having substantially7 horizontal corrugations; and means to maintain the same in spaced relation.
5. each comprising inner and outer corrugated plates and a crown comprising drums nippled to said inner plates.
8. ln a fire-box, the combination yof a crown comprising a plurality of drums and side walls comprising inner and outer corrugated plates having overlapped upper ends secured to said drums.
9. ln a lire-box, the combination of a crown comprising a plurality of drums; side walls comprising outer and inner corrugated plates spaced to provide water circulating chambers between them and having their upper ends formed to meet one another; means to secure said walls to said drums and means to permit communication between said chambers and said drums.
