UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. KENNEDY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
S'TEAM- BOILER.
SPEOIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,692, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed May 15, 1889- To, all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. KENNEDY, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Boiler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved boiler, which is simple, durable, and compact in 'GOllSlJI'llGlilOIl and utilizes the heat to the fullest advantage for generating steam.
The invention consists of certain parts and Figure 1 is asectional side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same, on the line w :r of Fig. 1.
The boiler C is composed of a central water-chamber F, provided on two sides with tube-sheets, from which extend watertubes E, which enter tube-sheets in the hemispherical end chambers D H, as shown in Fig. 1.-
Steam-pipes I I I rise, respectively, from the chambersD F H and communicate with a steam-dome J, from which steam is taken for use through pipe K. The lower part of the chamber H communicates by pipe L with a mud-drum N, both of which form a leg which supports-the rear end of the boiler on the brick-work O. The boileris centrally supported by the bridge-wall P, on which the bottom of central chamber F rests. The front of the boiler is supported on a front plate B, through which the hemispherical front end D of the boiler projects, said plate also carrying door Q to the fire=box Q and door S- to the ash-chamber S, the grate being indicated by R. The sides, top, and rear of the boiler are inclosed by atcasing B E the chimney being shown at W. At B is a hinged man-hole plate to give access to the interior space between the boiler and casing. The chambers D F H are each provided with man-holes to facilitate access to the interiors thereof and to the tubesheets for the Serial 110,310,839. (No model.)
cleaning of same, and for the removal and replacing of the tubes, when required. Between the upper surface of the boiler and its casing at T is a fire-wall, as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation is as follows: The products of combustion rise from the fire-box Q and pass between the tubes E and against their connected tube-sheets, thence in direction of the arrow, around the pipe I and over the central chamber F, thence down between the tubes and tube-sheets of the chamber H and rear end of chamber F to chamber U, thence around the pipe L and drumN to 'passage way V, and thence up around the rear end of hemispherical chamber H to chimney W.
In the side of the casing at U is a valve to I give access to chamber N for cleaning and for admission of air topromote combustion of the gases, if desired.
The construction of my improved boiler with hemispherical ends greatly adds to the strength of the boiler, and, in connection withthe large surface exposed to the products of combustion, enables me to produce .aboiler of great steaming-power within comparatively small dimensions. It will be .noticed that the heat comes into'contact with every part of the boiler, except the projecting front end and the small part of the central chamber F- that rests on the wall P. The products of combustion are thus retained or heldfor a considerable time in contact with the heating-surfaces of the boiler, which renders it highly economical in use. The passage of the products of combustion in contact with the pipes leading to the steam-drum has a tendency to superheat and dry the steam as it rises from the boiler.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the shell B and the bridge=wall P, of the boiler 0, consisting ',of the compartments D F H, and the tubes E G, connecting the compartments, the compartment D being on the front of the shell and the compartments F H ,within the shell, the
steam-dome J, outside of the shell, and the pipes I I 1*, connecting the compartments with the dome, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the shell B, prodrum-N,- under the inner end of the boiler and vided with the chimney W, of the boiler 0, connected to the compartment H by pipe L, 10 formed with the compartments D F H, consubstantially as herein shown and described. nected by tubes E G, the compartment D be- 5 ing on thefront of the shell and the compart- WILLIAM J. KENNEDY.
ments F H Within the shell, the steam-dome Witnesses: J, outside of the shell and connected to the JOHN J. BOULGER,
compartments by pipes I I I and the mud- WM. A. LANE.
