BREATH-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT J. LEMONDS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Livingston, in the county of Rockcastle and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breath-Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to breath guards for use by barbers, dentists or other professionals and the primary objectof the invention is the provision of a breath guard for attachment to the nostrils of the professionalist to prevent his breath from direct engagement with the face of the patient upon which he is operating.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a breath guard as specified which embodies a pair of flexible tubes radiating from the nostrils of the professionalist, which tubes have connected thereto a plate of spring sheet metal shaped to form a clamping action for securely clamping the tubes upon the nostrils of the wearer.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved breath guard. Fig. 2 is a front view of the guard, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clamping plate of the breath guard. Fig. 4 is a view showing the improved breath guard attached to a persons face.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l and 2 designate flexible tubes which have their upper ends reduced as is shown at 3 for insertion into the nose or nostrils of a wearer. The tubes 1 and 2 are curved outwardly and transversely of the straight portions which are inserted into the nostrils so as to pass along the face of the wearer. The tubes 1 and 2 have collars 4L and 5 mounted annularly thereupon and spaced inwardly a short distance from the reduced ends 3, which collars are provided for engagement with the under side of the wearers nose to prevent breath from escaping from the nostrils except through the tubes 1 and 2.
The ends 3 are of an increased thickness where they engage the cartilage of the wearers nose as indicated at 3 and are provided with slots formed therein, in which slots are seated the ends 7 and 8 of the tongues 9 and 10. The ends 7 and 8 of the tongues 9 and 10 extend upwardly through the collars a and 5.
The tongues 9 and 10 are formed upon a resilient plate 11, and they are bent intermediate their ends to position the ends 7 and 8 horizontally and at acute angle to the portions of the tongue which extend longitudinally from the finger gripping portion 12 and 13 of'the plate 8, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. These horizontal ends 7 and 8 are inserted in the slots 6 formed in the collars 4 and 5, owing to the resiliency of the plate 11 and the bending of the same, these tongues will tend to hold the inner edges of the collars e and 5 in en gagement with the sides of the cartilage of the wearers nose, similar to the way in which eye glasses are mounted upon the bridge of a'wearers nose.
The finger ripping portions 12 and 13 extend downwardly from the bridge 14 of the plate at acute angles thereto, and they are provided for gripping by the finger for moving the collars a and 5 out of binding engagement with the cartilage of a wearers nose so as to permit of the removal of the breath guard therefrom.
The upper reduced ends 3 of the tubes 1 and 2 have beads 20 formed thereupon for engagement with the inner walls of a persons nostrils for preventing the accidental removal of the tubes from the nostrils.
When it is desired to attach the improved breath guard as heretofore described to a persons nose, the finger gripping portion 12- and 13 of the resilient bridge 1 1 are moved toward each other for forcing the horizontal ends 7 and 8 of the tongues 9 and 10 away from each other, which will permit of the insertion of the ends 3 into the nostrils of a person's nose to the desired depth.

outwardly from each other allowing the ends 7 and 8 to move in toward each other and cause the ends 3 to firmly grip the cartilage of the nose and hold the tubes 1 and 2 properly positioned upon the wearers face,
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessita-te alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alternations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
W hat is claimed is 1. In a breath guard, a pair of flexible tubes curved to conform to the shape of a wearers face, collars mounted upon said tubes being reduced for insertion into the nostrils of a wearer, enlargements formed upon said tubes adjacent said reduced ends, collars formed upon said tubes adjacent said reduced ends, and a resilient metallic plate having upstanding tongues formed thereupon connected to said collar and said en'- largements downwardly extending finger grips formed upon said plate and disposed oppositely to said tongues for moving said tongues oppositely to the movement of said finger grip, said tongues being secured to said collars and said enlargements for holding said enlargements in firm binding engagement with the cartilage of the wearers nose.
