Description

y To" @ZZ tctchtitfmty: concern.-`
` 1 `Be it known that T, HUGH S. BALL, of Spar; "`tanburg`,in1"the district of Spartanburg and "State o ffSouth Carolina, have invented a new Y "anduseful Improvement in Combined Ruler, 1"Blot-ter,"and"` Paper-.Gutter 5 and y I do hereby fjdeclarethatthe following is a full, clear, and i exact descriptionuthereof, which will enable. Mothers skilled in.` the art Ito make and use the y l same, `,reference being had to the accompanyi f 1 ingdrawings, forming part of this specification. l
IMy `inventionrelates to compound ruler, blotterfand paper-cutter; 4and it consists `in a new Way? of combining the several parts, as l .hereinafter described, and subsequently speci- Wed' in the claim.` i. 1 i. J l, ",QIn theyaccompanying drawings, Figure l representsa face view ofthe article, `showing `thefblotter,` ruler, `and paper-cutter. Fig. 2 is a side View, partly in section, Fig. 3 is a t. crosssection of Fig. 2 on the line x x. t Similar letters of reference indicate corre y ..sponding partslq 4 y 1 y 1 w A is afsemicircular case, which incloses the t blo'tter, iasprepresented in Fig. 3. ff Bis theiblotting-cylinder, which is su`py lfported onjpivots,"so`as to freely revolve within i the hollow semi-cylindrical caseA. One end `ofthe blotting-cylinder is supported in the `end piece, C, of theicase A, and the other end i `ina`spring, fas seengat d, Fig. 2. By this ar- .l "."rangementthe blotter-'can be readily removed `forrenewing the blottingpaperwhich covers e e `are `small.;metallic bands, by means of which 4the blottingfpaper is secured onthe "UNITED STATES l" Specification forming `part of Letters Patent No. l 12,4106, dated March 7, 1:.71.

IMPROVEMENT IN RULERS.
cylinder. The blotting-paper may be put on inf strips wound' spirally round the cylinder, or in any way which may be found most convenient. 'y
F is the ruler, which may be a strip of metal attached to A, as seen in the drawings, or the edge ofthe case may Abeturned up in any manner, so as to present a straight edge slightly `raised whenthe combined article is placed on the paper.
Gis the paper-cutter, which may be a continuation or extension of the edge of the case,
as seen in Fig. 3, or it may be a piece attached `to the case. When the article is placed upon the paper. this cutter, by slightly turning the case, will be brought in contact with the^paper, as seen in Fig. 3, so that the paper can bereadily torn thereby in the ordinary manner. The blotting-cylinder, being of uniform diameter throughout its entire length, will, when moved over paper, serve as a ruler for marking parallel lines with much greater rapidity and accuracy than can be done with the common flat ruler. The advantages of this combination are many, and must bev obvious to all.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The case A, spring d, and detachable end sleeves, e e, combined, as described, with the blotter-roll B, to `allow of its ready removal and replacement with new blotting-paper, as
described. i
