BURGLAR-ALARM.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 5, 1915.
Application filed April 6, 1914. Serial No. 829,907.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOI-IANNES AUGUST Gnone SoHMmnEBans, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and residing at Hamburg, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is an electrically operated burglar alarm, which is constructed as a self-contained unit so as to be readily portable, and to be capable of being set in any desired position in operative relationship with any body which is liable to be moved by a burglar in gaining access to the premises about to be entered.
The device is so constructed as to be capable of being adjusted or set by unskilled persons.
The burglar alarm is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a plan, Fig. 2 a section on the line A-A Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a perspective view.
As shown, the burglar alarm includes a portable box-like structure 1, accommodating an electric bell 2, and a dry electric battery 3 adapted to be brought into circuit with said bell. The said structure 1 is formed with an open box-like extension 3 bridged by a transverse bar 4 which serves to support a floating latch lever 5 and which, eX- tending through the wall 6 of this structure and contacting with a terminal 7 of the battery, serves as a conductor connecting said terminal 7 with said floating lever 5. The said lever 5 is formed with a wedge shaped head 5 adapted to be suspended intermediate the bar 4: and a conductor plate 8 fitted to the wall of the extension 3 and connected to one terminal of the bell circuit, and is adapted when released to bridge said bar 4: and said plate 8 and establish electric contact so as to bring the bell into circuit with the battery. The inner face of the head 5 is formed with a narrow shoulder 9 normally resting on the bar l; when the floating lever is so supported, the circuit is open. The arrangement is such that on the slightest disturbance of the floating lever 5 the shoulder 9 is disengaged from the bar 4: and the floating lever falls under the action of gravity, and by reason of the wedge formation of the head 5 acts to bridge the bar 4 and the plate 8. r
The lever 5 is formed with an arm 10 having a flattened and roughened end 11 adapted to contact with the surface of the floor or the like upon which the device rests, so that the lever may be tripped even on vibration of the floor.
12 denotes an eyebolt adapted to be en tered by a cord by means of which the device may be adapted to any body which is liable to be moved by a burglar.
Vihat I claim is A burglar alarm device comprising in combination a boxlike structure, a battery and a bell contained in said structure, a normally open circuit connecting the battery and said bell, a supporting member of conducting material fitted to said structure and in electrical connection with the battery, a terminal plate fitted to said structure and in electrical connection with the bell, and a floating latch lever adapted to be supported by said supporting member out of contact with said terminal plate, and acting when tripped to engage said terminal plate and close the circuit.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHANNES AUGUST GEORG SCHMIEDEBERG.
