Description
Patented NOV. 3, 1914.
ERNEST v:amaroEuramsy or iviiw YORK, 'N. Y.
PORTABLE inmensa-ALARM.
Specification of Letters" Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1914i.
Application med August a, 1912. 'serial No. 713,989.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Burglar-Alarms, of which the fol` lowing is a specification. The present invention relates to burglar alarms and has for its object to provide a portable or what may be called a pocketburglar alarm of such a construction that the same can be carried along on ak journey and set up at any suitable place to be at once ready for use without requiring' any wiring and fixing in position."
Hithert'o burglar alarms'. have been xed to walls or other-stationary parts and -when electrically 'operated alarms are used the fixing of lead wires is necessary, so that the attachment of such alarm devices is somewhat troublesome and takes some time.
The burglar alarm, according to my invention, will enable a person who changes his quarters frequently, as forinstance a traveling salesman, to always carry a bur* glar alarm with him, which he may set up and quickly connect t0 the door, window of his room, or to a drawer, or to any easily removable object, to be ready for immediate To'accomplish my object, my alarm device substantially consists of a box containing an alarm bell of suitable construction and operable by mechanical or electrical power and a device for setting the alarm bell in operation, which device is adapted to be tied to the door. i
My invention is fully illustrated in the ac- -companylng drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts, Figure l being a top plan view of the box and of the removed lid and showing the alarm device proper arranged therein and Fig. 2 being a'perspective view of the closed box shown connected to a door.
In the present embodiment of my invention I have shown the alarm device to consist of an electric bell, but I wish it to be expressly understood that my invention is not restricted to such bells, as any other suitable alarm instruments may be substi* tuted therefor, without deviating Vfrom the principle of my invention.
In the drawing a'denotes a portable box of any suitable size and construction, containing 'an electric alarm bell b which isop erated. from a dry battery c, bell, battery land the connecting wires `being fixed in the switch d. In the present example the switch, d is fulcrumed on the inner surface of the lid-v e. In addition to this switch a spring ac.-
tuated double armed lever f or-the like'is fulcrumed on the inner surface of the lid, one arm f thereof being adapted to normally contact with .the switch d and the other arm being provided at itsv free end` with a bend f which projects outwardly through a circularly curved slot g made -in the lid e. If itis switch d may be swung so as -to be out of contact with the arm fa. The bend has an eyelet 7u or the like to which a cord i or other' flexible` means is attached and which is adapted to be tied to the door y', window or an object, the opening or removal of whlchis to be prevented.
As the boXis adapted to rest loosely 0n` the floor or on any suitable support the same, ywith its contents, is adapted to' be of comparatively heavy weight so as to require more force for its displacement than that for overcoming the tension of the springt. 2 actuating .thelever f. The box is so positioned vrelativey tothe door or other ob]ect or its connectiontothe latter through the medium of thezcordis such, that the arm f normally will be held inaA central position between the lateralpa'rts fr of the U-shaped contact piece k. When onan attempt to open the door, as indicated'by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the arm is caused to swingl to the right or the left from its centrall position, the same will come into contact with any one ofthe lat- The circuit of said battery is con-16 trolled by an ordinary manually adjustable;

In a burglar alarm,.,the combination withV 'a portable box, of an valarm bell and a batv tery for the operation of said belly arranged.
