SHUTTER QPER.. LTOR AND LATCH.
Application filed November 20, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Animal APPLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter Operators and Latches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in shutter operators and more particularly to those having means for securely locking the shutter in a closed position.
The primary object of the invention is to improve the structure of devices of this character to such an extent as to eliminate the necessity of notching or marring the bottom of the sash.
A secondary object is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, strong, and efficient in operation and well adapted to the purpose for which it is de signed.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination described and claimed herein, and shown in the drawings wherein 1 Figure l is an inner side view of a win dow frame with the sash raised showing my invention applied to the shutter. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a different position of parts. Fig. i is a vertical section on line l l of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section.
In the drawings I have shown a window frame 1 comprising the usual sides 2, sill 3, apron 4:, and an ordinary shutter 5 hinged to the outside of the frame in the usual manner. Near its lower end and on its inner side, the shutter carries a horizontal guide rod 6, the end of the rod remote from the hinged edge of the shutter being bent inwardly at right angles to provide a stop 7 and being then continued outwardly and secured to the shutter. The other end of the rod is also secured to the shutter as shown. J ournaled in a suitable bearing in the sill 3 is a vertical shaft 8 having an arm 9 rigidly secured to its upper end and a short crank arm 10 rigidly carried byits lower end. The arm 9 is provided with an eye 9 at its Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914;.
Serial No. 802,113.
outer end adapted to travel longitudinally on the guide rod 6 and inwardly on the stop 7 thereon when the shaft 8 is rotated in the proper direction to close the shutter, and to abut said stop when the shutter is totally closed, whereby opening of the latter without first swinging the arm 9 outwardly, is rendered impossible. For rotating the shaft 8 I preferably employ an operating link 11 which is pivoted at 12 to the crank arm 10 and passes inwardly through an aperture in the apron 4: and a slot 13 in a plate 14: secured over said opening and is provided with an ornamental knob or handle 15. By this structure it will be readily seen that by operating the link 11 in the proper direction, the shaft 8 will be rotated thus causing the eye 9 on the arm 9 carried by said shaft to travel on the guide rod 6 and open or close the shutter as the case may be.
I preferably provide the link 11 with oblique notches 11 near its inner end, said notches being adapted to engage the end walls of the slot 13 and thus hold the shaft 8 and its arm 9 in either of their extreme positions.
When the shutter 5 is in a closed position, the eye 9 of the arm 9 is adapted to engage the loop 7 and when in this position the shaft 8 is locked against rotation by the above described means. Thus it will be seen that the shutter will be securely locked in a closed position, but may readily be opened by disengaging one of the notches 11' from the end of the slot 13 and operating the link 11.
An important feature of my invention lies in the fact that on account of its structure, it is not necessary to notch or even mar the. window sash in applying it.
Although I have described and claimed my invention as applied to a shutter, it will be understood that it is adapted for application to any hinged closure.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the appended claim.
W hat is claimed as new is:
The combination with a window frame and a closure hinged therein, of a guide rod spaced inwardly from the lower margin of the closure, the end of the rod remote from the hinge line of the closure being extended inwardly at right angles to provide a stop and being then continued outwardly and secured to the closure, the other end of said rod being also secured to the closure, a 5 swinging operating arm pivoted to the sill of the frame and an eye on the outer end of the arm and slidable upon the guide rod, said eye being adapted to travel longitudinally on said rod and inwardly on the stop 1 as the closure is being closed, and to abut nesses.
