To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatwe, JAMES COCHRAN and JOHN C. C0'111IL\N,C1111ZOI1S of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to improvement in boxes and particularly to a type adapted for. shipping purposes.
' The object of the invention resides in the provision of a box which will be light,'ex'- ceedingl r strong and capable of meeting effecti ely the manifold conditions imposed upon itin service. f
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a boxin whichthe ends, side, top and bottom members: aresecured together in such manner as to render it impracticable to drive off; a, givenfmember with a blow or to open thebox without first removing all the fastening devices in a given member thereof whereby pilfe rinjg i's rendered diflicult. 1
A still further object of theflinvention resides in the provision of abox inwhich the corners are secured together with three sets of independent fastenings which render the box practically inseparable at the corners which are the weakest points in abox structure. I
lVith the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the details of con-' struction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail ref- .erence will'be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective vlew partly broken away of a box constructed in accord ance with the invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the box; Fig. 3, a transverse section thereof; Fig. 4, an enlarged detail view showing the manner of fastenmg the corners of the box together; Fig. 5,
a detail perspective view showing the manner of mounting the central members of the outer frames embodied in the top, bottom I and sides of the box, and Fig. 6, a detail perspective of a fragment of one of the sides of the box looking at the inner side thereof and showing a modified construction 'wherebya portion of the inner frame may be dispensed with when desired.
Referring to the drawings the boX is shown as comprising a top A, bottom B, side members C and D and end members E andF. Each of the members A, B, C, D, E and F are constructed of outer and inner frames which, secure therebetween a panel 10 of any suitable light material such as fiberboard, strawboard 0r veneer. The inner frame of each member is constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material. The outer frames of each of the top, bottom and sides includes longitudinal members 11 and 12 and transverse members 13 and 14 and further includes a central longitudinal.
member 15 connected to the transverse members 13 and 14: by a mortise joint indicated at 16 and whereby the connection between the central longitudinal member and the transverse members of the outer frame is strengthened. The inner frame of each of the top, bottom and side members is equal in dimensions to the outer frame thereof and includes longitudinal members 17 and 18, transverse members 19 and 20 and a central longitudinal member 21. The transverse members 19 and 20 included in the sides of the box are extended at their ends so as to bridge the joints between the longitudinal and transverse members of the outer frames,

-tral vertical transverse member 26 connected to the horizontal transverse members 22 and 23 by a suitable mortise joint. The inner frame of each end E and F is equal in dimensions to the outer frame thereof and includes horizontal transverse members 27 and 28, vertical transverse members 29 and 30, and a central vertical transverse member 31. The horizontal transverse members 27 and 28 are extended at their ends so as to bridge the joints between the Vertical transverse members and the horizontal transverse members of the outer frame. By thus bridging the joints of the outer frames with certain members of the inner frame it will be obvious that the strength of the structure is materially enhanced. The ends of the central longitudinal members 21 of the top and bottom are extended and trained over the ends of the box so as to overlie the outer sides of the outer frames of the ends E and F and bridge the joints at the terminals of the vertical transverse central members as at 32. This structure also tends to enhance the strength of the box.
In assembling the box the sides, top, bottom and ends are associated with their extremities in overlapping relation and then secured together by driving in suitable fastening devices after which the extensions 32 of the central longitudinal members 21are secured in bridging relation to the joints at the ends of the vertical transverse members 26 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The corners of the box are secured together by three sets of fastenings indicated at 33, 34 and 35, such method of fastening enhancing the strength of the corners and rendering it extremely diflicult to remove any section of the box without first withdrawing all the fastening devices engaged therein.
If desired the portions of the inner frame which come between adjoining parts of outer/ frames in the assembled box may be omitted, such a structure being clearly disclosed in Fig. 6 where the transverse members of the inner frame of one side are dispensed with and only the panel 10 interposed between adjoining parts of the outer frames.
While one form of carrying the invention into practice has been illustrated and described it will be obvious that various changes in size, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without in any manner departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
. What we claim is 1. A box comprising side, end, top and bottom members having their adjacent extremities overlapped and secured to one aninner frames of the top and bottom being extended and trained-across the outer sides of the adjacent end members to bridge-the joints at the ends of the central members of the outer frame of the ends of the box,
' and a ,panel secured between said inner and outer frames.
2. A box comprising side, end, top and bottom members having their adjacent extremities overlapped and secured to one another, each of said members comprising superimposed inner and outer. rectangular frames having their corresponding outer edges in registration, and a panel secured between .said inner and outer frames with all its edges in registration with the corresponding outer edges of the frames whereby portions of the panel and of the inner frame will be clamped between the overlapped extremities of the members.
3. A box comprising side, end, top and bottom members having their adjacent extremities overlapped and secured to each other, each of said members comprising inner and outer rectangular frames, the inner and outer frames of the top, bottom and ends including central members disposed in a common plane, the central members of the inner frames of the top and bottom being extended and trained across an outer face of the adjacent end members, and a panel secured between said inner and outer frames.
