BOX CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1906.-
Applieation filed April 21, 1905. Serial No. 256,739.
in which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of boxes adapted to be used as mailing-receptacles.
It has for its object to produce a device of this character which will be very strong in construction and which will at the same time be very light in weight; and it consists, essen tially, of a wooden framework around pasteboard or paper sides.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and ac companying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the boX. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the ends.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same boX construction, and more particularly to The boX, as shown in the drawings, is of j rectangular form and comprises two end panels 1, two side panels 2, and top and bottom panels 3, each of said panels being provided with reinforcing-frames and being arframes and the frames being 1 arranged with respect to each other in the manner to be now described. The panels are all constructed of pasteboard or other similar light material, and the frames are preferably constructed of wood and are so arranged with respect to each other that the pasteboard panels are entirely protected and covered up at every edge. The frame for the end panels 1 is designated 4, that for the side panels 2 is designated 5, and the ones for the top and bottom panels 3 designated 6. The end frames 4 are, as shown in Fig. 4, provided with rabbeted portions 4 around their entire margins, and the end panels 1 are secured to the projecting rectangular portion produced by said rabbet with their ed es flush with the edge of the rabbet. The ames 5 for the side panel are also provided with rabbeted 1 portions 5*, and the side panels 2 are like the end panels 1, secured to said rabbeted portions with their edges flush with the edges of the latter. The top and bottom frames for the panels 3 are not rabbeted at all and the end edges of the panels 3 lie flush with the end edges of the frames, while the side edges of said panels terminate short of the adjacent edges of the frames, at shown at 6*.
When the parts of the boX are secured together, as best seen in Figs. 2 and 3, the top and bottom frames 6 rest flush at their side edges with the edges of the side frame 5 and their end edges rest within the rabbeted portions 4 of the end frames 4. The side frames 5 also rest with their end edges in the rabbeted portions 4 of the end frames 4. and the side edges of the panels 3 overlap the panels 2 and fit within the rabbeted portions 5 of the end frames 5. It will thus be seen that while the pasteboard panels 1, 2, and 3 form tight joints with each other by reason of their overlapping edges, the end edges and side edges of the top and bottompanels projecting beyond the edges of the end panels and side panels, as shown, yet the rabbeted construction of the box-frames, especially the rabbet 5 receiving the end 6 of the top and bottom panels and the latter coming through to the outer edges of the frames, all of the pasteboard edges will be covered up and protected, which would not be the case if the pasteboard panels projected flush with the outer surface of the frames to which they are attached. The top and bottom frames are preferably braced, as shown at 7.
, Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A boX for the purpose described comprising end frames 4 rabbeted on all four edges, a panel of pasteboard or the like secured to the rabbeted portions with its edges flush therewith, Side frames 5 provided with top and bottom rabbets, similar panels 2 secured thereto with their edges flush with the rab- I00 beted portions, and with their ends fitting within the rabbeted portions of the end frames 4, and top and bottom frames 6 fit ted within the rabbeted portions of the end frames 4 and lying flush with the outer edges 105 of the side frames 5, and top and bottom panels 3 attached to said top and bottom frames 6, the end edges of said top and bot tom panels lying flush with the edges of the frames and the side edges of the said top and I 10 bottom panels terminating short of the side edges of their frames, and lying within the top and bottom rabbets of the frames 5,
whereby all of the panels will form overlap- 5 ping joints with each other and be entirely covered at their edges by the framework constitnted by the respective frames.
In testimony whereof I aflix signature Witnesses:
JOHN MGMULLEN, SIMON H. WOLF.
