SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 281,264, dated July 17, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-

.Be it known that I, J. Bnnnexnn Gnoor, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire-Bound Boxes and Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in the construction of boxesand cases that are strengthened by means of encircling bands of wire; and the object of my improvements is to aiford suitable protection to the corners of said boxes and cases by means of metallic protecting-pieces, that are held in place by means of the binding-wires and their fastening-staples in such manner that the corners and weakened edges of the boxes will receive protection against being broken and otherwise in jured by use. My invention is designed to remedy a wellknown defect that has long existed in wirebound boxes and cases of the usual construction. The said defect consists of an inherent weakness of the small rib of the box material that is left outside of the grooves that are cut around the box for containing the bindingwire; and this weakness, which is apparent on the ends of the side pieces, is most noticeable at the corners of said side pieces, for the reason that the grooves, by being cut crosswise of the grain of the wood, leave at those points short sections of ribs which possess so little strength that they are readily split off with a slight blow; and it is obvious that from their exposed position, and the rough usage to which such boxes are exposed, these short sections of ribs will soon be broken off from the corners of the boxes, so asto leave the binding-wires without their required support.

As represented in the drawings, A is the cornenprotect-ing piece, which I preferably make in the form of a right angle from sheet metal. The said protecting-piece is provided at its inner edge with a longitudinal troughshaped depression, a, which is adapted to fit into the wire-grooves cut around the box B for containing the wire bands, whereby the box is strengthened.

limb passes into the wood close beside the corn-er-piece, so that said staples will stand astride of the binding-wire and securely fasten it and the corner-piece in place.

By means of the corner-protecting pieces A, the ribsb at the corners of the box are pre served from injury, and the binding-wires C are maintained in place, so as to enable the boxes to endure a much longer term of service than those of the ordinary construction.

I claim as my invention- The combination, with a wire-bound box, B, as herein described, of the corner-protecting pieces A, each having a longitudinal troughshaped depression, a, and secured in place by the bindingwire (l, as herein specified.
