Description

W. J. PITT.
SHAOKLE.
- APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29,1914. 1, 1 21,865. Patented Dec. 22,1914.
WILLIAM J. PITT, 0F PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND.
SI-IACKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. t t 22 1914 Application filed June 29, 1914. Serial No. 847,883.
To all whom it may concern it known that I, WILLIAM J. PITT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at Plymouth, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shackles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to shackles and the object thereof is to provide an improved de vice of this class having a positive lock whereby the shackle pin is held in place, and which be conveniently operated to either lock or release said pin, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional side view of my improved shackle; Fig. 2 a view at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrow 2; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modification; and, Fig. 1 a view similar to Fig. 2 of the construction shown in Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, I provide a shackle comprising the usual U-shaped body a and a lock shackle pin 0. I also provide a forelock 0 which, in construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a circular disk provided on its inner side with an annular shoulder 0 and one side arm of the Ll-shaped body a is provided with an annular groove a adapted to receive the annular shoulder 0 and arivet pin (Z is passed through the forelock c and through said side arm of the U-shaped body a and riveted as shown at (Z The pin 61 is provided at its outer end with a head (Z and adjacent thereto with an enlargement (Z on which the forelock c is adapted to turn, and the object of the annular shoulder a of the forelock c and the annular enlargement (i of the rivet pin (Z is to prevent the jamming of the forelock when the pin (Z is riveted at (Z The forelock c, or the disk from which it is formed, is adapted to enter a corresponding recess 6 in the bottom of the end of the shackle pin 6, and said forelock is also provided in one side edge thereof with an arc-shaped recess 0 whereby it may be turned so as to permit of the withdrawal of the shackle pin 6. The shackle pin b is oblong in vertical section, and the side arms of the Ushaped body a are provided with corresponding apertures a through which said shackle pin is passed and by means of the for-clock c the shackle pin may be locked in the position shown in Fig. 8, or said forelock may be turned so as to permit of the withdrawal of said pin. The forelock 0 is preferably provided with oppositely arranged holes or apertures 0 through which may be passed pins or other devices for locking it against rotation and, in this event, the side arm of the U-shaped body a on which the forelock is mounted will be provided with corresponding holes or apertures to receive said pins. It will be observed that the top end portions of the side arms of the U-shaped body a are enlarged as shown at a in Fig. 2, but my invention is not limited to the exact shape or any particular form of the U-shaped body a.
In Figs. 3 and 1, I have shown a modification in which two of the forelocks o are employed, and these forelocks are provided on one side thereof with extensions forming arms 0 by which they may be turned, or otherwise manipulated, and said arms are provided with apertures 0 through which may be passed a wire or other device which may be passed around the U-shaped body a, or the side portions thereof, to lock the forelocks against rotation, and in this form of construction the shackle pin 6 is provided with two of the recesses b and, in this form of construction, the apertures a are of greater vertical dimensions than in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the shackle pin b is provided in the top surface thereof with recesses 5 and the operation of locking the shackle pin also raises it and said pin is locked both at the top and bottom thereof, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3.
With my improvement the shackle pin 6 may be easily locked against any movement whatever, and as easily released whenever desired, and changes in and modifications of the details of construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as neW and desire to secure by Letalso provided in one edge portion thereof ters Patent, is With a recess whereby the turning thereof A shackle, comprising a U-shaped body, Will release said pin. and a shackle pin passed transversely In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 5 through the side arms thereof and means my invention I have signed my name in for locking said shackle pin in position conpresence of the subscribing Witnesses this sisting of a rotatable forelock having a cir- 9th day of June 1914.
cu-lar head countersunk in the outer side of WILLIAM J. PITT. an arm of the U-shaped body and adapted X Vitnesses:
10 to engage a recess formed in an end portion C. MULREANY,
of the shackle pin, said circular head being H. E. THOMPSON.
