WHIP-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cnnrcnron A. LOGAN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Belmont, in the county of ,Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip- Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in whip sockets, and particularly to looks therefor.
The principal object is to provide a simple structure which can be attached to the ordinary whip socket which is arranged to lock the whip in the socket, and to be opened only by those authorized.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. g
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a whip socket showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the socket and lock. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents the whip socket which is provided in one side thereof and intermediate of the length, with a longitudinal opening 11. Secured to the socket and arranged over the opening 11 is a housing 12, this housing having an opening 13 which is arranged in registry with the opening 11 of the socket. Extending transversely in the housing, and adjacent the opening 13 is a shaft 14, which carries rigidly secured thereto a cam block 15. This block is so arranged'that the enlarged or nose portion 16 thereof can be turned through the opening 11 of the socket and engaged against the butt of the whip 17 disposed in the socket, to wedge the same against the opposite side of the socket and prevent unauthorized removal. On the periphery of the cam block at a point opposite the nose 16 are the ratchet teeth 18, these teeth being arranged to be engaged byv the free end 19 of a leaf-spring 20, suitably secured within the housing. This spring has formed near Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 14, 1913. Serial No. 784,830.

its free end a shoulder 20 under which is engaged a finger 21 carried by a transverse shaft 22, this shaft also carrying a downwardly and outwardly extending member A yoke-shaped resilient member 24 is secured to the top of the housing and extends downwardly over the outer end thereof and has its other end 25 disposed under the bottom of the housing and provided with an elongated slot 26. A washer plate 27 is disposed over the slotted portion 25 and secured to the bottom of the housing by. means of a screw 28. Thus the member 24 can be moved inwardly and outwardly, the lower portion above the bottom of the housing being arranged to engage the before-mentioned member 23. r
In the operation of the device, the shaft 14 is turned by means of a suitable thumbpiece 14 carried thereby, so that the teeth 18 will pass under the end 19 of the spring 20. lVhen so turned, the nose'16 will pass into the socket through the opening 11 and engage against the butt ofthe whip. The engagement of the spring with the teeth, effectively prevents the block being rotated back to the original position. To release the block, the lower portion of the resilient member 24 is pushed inwardly to engage the member 23 which causes the rocking of the shaft 22 and the engagement of the" ment of the member 24.
' What is claimed is:
The combination with a whip socket having an opening in one side, of a whip looking device secured to the socket over the opening and consisting of a cam block rotatably disposed to project through the opening in the socket, ratchet teeth formed on a portion of the periphery of the block, a leafspring mounted in the housing and engaggagement with the second finger, to rock' ing the teeth of the block, said spring havthe shaft and cause the finger to release the ing ashoulder adjacent the free end thereof, spring from the teeth. a 10 a transverse shaft having a radial finger en- In testimonywhereof, I affix my signagaging under the said shoulder, a second ture, in'the presence of two Witnesses.
