To all whom, it ntay concern:

Be it known that I, FRED S. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Sioux City, in the county of Dakota and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Gas-Cocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in a lock for gas-cocks.

It happens sometimes, by reason of inexperience or carelessness, that in turning off the gas the person turns the same on again sufficiently to allow the escape of gas, causing a waste of gas and endangering life.

My invention has for its object to provide a cheap and simple lock for insuring a complete shut off of gas and holding the cock in locked position.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the cock in locked position. Fig. 2 shows the same unlocked.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 3 designates a gas fixture, comprising a burner 4, a body 5, a barrel 6, and a plug 7, provided with the usual key or thumb-piece 8. A washer 9 is secured to the plug 7 bya screw 10in the usual manner. The upper edge of the barrel 6, directly below the washer 9, is provided with a notch 6. The outer edge of the washer 9 is also notched, as at 9, the location of this notch being such that it will be in alinement or register with the notch 6" when the gas is shut off. A spring-latch 11 is secured to the body 5 of the fixture by a screw or otherwise, as at 11". This latch occupies the notch 9 when the gas is shut ofi When and holds the plug in locked position.

it is desired to unlock the plug and turn on the gas, the latch is pushed from the notch 9" down into the notch 6. This permits the turning of the plug 7, the latch 11 being held within the notch 6 by the under side of the washer 9. When the gas is turned ofi, the

latch springs back into the notch 9 as soon i as the same registers with the notch 6. The plug then cannot be turned until the latch is pressed downward into the notch 6, as heretofore described.

It will be seen that the action of this lock is automatic, and by reason of its simplicity it may be readily attached to any ordinary gas-fixture.

Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-- i I. The combination with the body, barrel, and plug of a gas-cock, the barrel having a notch in the end, of a notched washer carried by the plug, and a spring-latch secured to the body engaging the notch in the washer to lock the plug against rotation when the gas is turned off, and which is held within the notch in the barrel by the washer when the gas is turned on, substantially as described.

2. The combination with the body, barrel, and plug of a gas-cock, the barrel having a notch in the end, of a washer carried by the plug having a notch in the inner face thereof which registers with the notch in the barrel when the gas is turned 0E, and a spring-latch, one end of which is attached to the body, and the other end of which projects between the end of the barrel and the washer, into the notches, substantially as described.
