Description
, Maryland, have inventedv certain new and useful Imin dress boots, a close-fitting pair of pantaloons will equal to Vtl had mes JAcon-s LEwrs,or BA LTIMORE,MARYLAND.
Leners Patent No. 112,056, dated February 21, 1871 'IMPROVEMENT IN BOCTS- The Schedule referred to nvthese-Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JACOB S. Lewis, of Baltimore, 'in the county of Baltimoreand in the State of provements in Boots; and do hereby'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaecompanying drawing and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My inventon'consists in the construction of a boot, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
Difficulty has been experienced `by wearers of boots on account oi the height, thickness, and unusual warmth of the leg.
Boots having legs of toogreat a height will wrinkle, drop down, and. cause the pantaloon to assume annntidy appearance, and if lined, as is usually the case notsit well at .the bottoni, and the ankle of the wearer will be caused to perspire and feel unpleasant by the thickness of the boot-leg.
My Objectis to so construct theleg of the boot as to obviate these diilcnlties, and to accomplish this I construct my boot of suitable leather, and have the leg of light leather, such as calf-skin, morocco, and thev like, and of three-quarters. the usual height of boot-legs no'w made. The entire lleg is unlined, and its top is formed of the usb'al shape. After or before the boot is made I cnt the top of the legn the manner as hereinafter described.
In the annexed drawing- A lrepresents thefoot of thc boot, and
B, the leg. A l l The vfront of this leg, at its top, is provided with I a vertical cnt, X, which is extended, just before' it reaches-td thetop of the leg, at rightaigles, and-to the right cr left of -the boot-leg, for a distance nearly ie vertical cut, the entire slit assuming the shape of an inverted letter L.:
Ihe cut thus formed leaves a narrow strip of leather, a, which isabove the outer half of the front part of the boot-leg. On this latter part of the leg, directly beneath the strap thus formed, I attach a small buckle, and into which buckle the end ofthe strap is intended to pass for the purpose of contracting the size of the bootleg and 'cause it to closely or loosely lit the leg of the wearer, as may he desired.
The leg of my boot Vbeing cut jnst threequarters the usual height, it is necessary, in sorne cases, to allow the top of the leg,r to he larger or smaller, to suit the size of the calfoi' the leg of the wearer, and being entirely nnlined, to prevent the leg from falling down and wrinkling around the ankle.
'The above-mentioned device is intended for these purposes, and allows the manufacture of a boot :it lunch less cost than heretofore.
It will be seen that the buckle b is secured to the leg by a small strap, which is lapped over a part of the buckle and passed through a narrow slot in the bootleg, and then secured under the strap of the boot-leg and sewed to the leg of the boot with the strap.
'Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as' new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-,
The within-described hoot, having an unlined leg, nt three-quarters high, slotted at its top, as described, provided with the strap and buckle, all conssructed substantially and for the'purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I haveV hereunto set ruy hand this lst day of February, 1871.
J. S. LEWIS. Witnesses:
J. M. MASON, EDM. BROWN.
