BOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378.988I dated March 6, 1888.
Application filed August 31, 1887.
To all whom t may concer-11,:
Be it known that I, ANDREW M. WARREN, of Iteidsville, in the county of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my improved boot. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 show the various patterns for the several pieces for the bootnppers.
This invention relates to improvements in boots, its object being to produce a close-litting Congress boot; and it consists in the novel construction of the same, as will be fully understood from the following` description, when taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings, and particularly 'specified in the claim hereto appended. v i
Referring by letters to the drawings, Adesignates the complete boot, which is composed of the'whole vamp B, secured to the sole, and held in the usual manner, and having but one seam at rear. This vamp B has its upper edge standing about on a line with the ankle of the wearer. To the front upper edge of vamp B, or instep portion thereof, is secured the bottom of the front leg-piece, C, which is more 4clearly shown in Fig. 3, and which has a projecting instep portion, c, as shown, properly stretched and shaped to accommodate the instep of the wearer. The sides of piece G rise from about the ankle of the boot, and are concaved or dislrshaped, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, for a purpose hereinafter shown.
D designates the back piece or pattern of theleg of the boot, corresponding in height to piece C, and similarly dished or concaved at its sides, so that when secured in place its concaved edges or sides stand opposite the similar concaved sides of piece G. -It will be observed that the piece D is made whole; consequently there is no seam at the back of the boot abovethe vamp B. Y
E designates an elastic goring, one on each side of the boot-leg, and similarly secured to the opposite side edges of pieces D and C and to the adjoining edge of vamp B, as shown. This goring E extends the height of the bootleg or pieces D C, and is wide at the center and tapers to both ends, its side edges being Serial No. 248,388. (No model.)
preferably convex, as shown, so as to correspend with the configuration of the edges of pieces D C, to which it is attached. This shape of the gores C, as clearly indicated, renders the t of the bootleg upon the leg of the wearer close, but not uncomfortable, and by reason of this close fitting the boot-leg will .not wrinkle on the instep, since, the upper part of the leg of the boot being smaller than the calf of the wearer, before the instep of the boot could wrinkle it would be necessary for the upper part of the boot-leg to be drawn down, and the elastic gering E would naturally prevent this unless force were applied; consequently the boot always preserves a neat appearance. Were the gores C notwider at 7o center than at top or bottom, their elasticity at center would be soon impaired, owing to the greater strain u pon its center when in use, and consequently the boot-leg would lose its fit-after short use.
To theupper edge of the leg portion of the boot is attached a topping, F, having an elastic gore, G. The top F may be of one piece having rear edges connected by the elastic gore G, as shown; or the topping may be formed of the front piece,f, and the rear side pieces, g g, between which is the gore G. The topping and gore are stitched to the top of the boot in the usual manner, the gore G, however, being at the back of the boot, preferably; but, if desired, the gores G may be arranged on the side similar to the goring E. It will be observed that by this means the elastic goring is continued from the instep or ankle of the boot to the top thereof, by which its putting on or off is facilitated and at the same time snugness of fit insured.
Having described my invention, what I claim The boot A, composed of whole vamp D, front piece, C, provided with concaved side edges above the instep, whole back portion, D, provided with concaved side edges above the instep, the double tapered elastic gorings E, and the topping F and its gore G, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW M. WARREN.
