LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed May 8, 1914. Serial No. 837,236.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SILAS WV. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in looks and more particularly to a combination lock, the main ob ect of the invention being the provision oi a lock which is particularly adapted for use upon tool chests and objects of a like character and includes a casing, pivoted locking members arranged therein, dials arranged upon the outer side of the casing and adapted to be rotated, and means whereby to ac tuate the locking members and disengage the same from their keepers in order to un lock the tool chest or other casing.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a combination lock of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features; of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims. D
In the accompanying drawing iorming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a combination lock constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 9. is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 1 is a detail front elevation of a tool chest illustrating the up plication oi my improved lock.
In carrying out my invention, provide a casing 1 which is arranged wlthin a recess formed in the side wall of the chest and ar ranged upon the outer side of the side wall of the chest, is a plate 2, upon which the dials 3 and 4 are mounted. Mounted for rotation within the casing 1, are the tumblers 5 and 6, the tumbler 6 being mounted within the tumbler fiend each of the tumblers being provided with openings 7 adapted to be brought into alinement, through which the arms 8 are movable, inorder to engage the pivoted locking bars 9 and actuate the same.
The arms 8 are pivoted to the rotary S- shaped member 10 which is mounted within the inner tumbler (3 and is rotated by means of a handle member 11 formed upon the outer end oi? the rod 12, upon which the S- shaped member 10 is mounted. Spring members secured to the member 10 and the outer ends thereof are adapted to bear against the arm 8 in order to yicldably re tain the same into engagement with the inner walls of the inner sleeve, so that when the openings in the two sleeves are brought into alinement, the arms 8 will readily pass therethrough and be assisted by the action of the springs. Suitable stops 13 are formed integral with one side of the casing and are adapted to be engaged by the ends of the S-shaped member to limit the rotary movement of the same. Lugs 14L are also formed integral with the casing and project inwardly and are adapted to engage the pivoted locking mcn'lbers 9 in order to limit the movement of the same, said locking members being retained in a. normally locked position by means oi the coil spring 15, the ends of which are secured to the locking members adjacent their outer ends. Formed integral with the tumblers 5 and 6, are the reduced sleeves 16 and 17 which pro ject outwardly and are mounted upon the inwardly projecting sleeves 18 and 18 which are formed integral with the movable dials and 1, whereby upon the rotary movement of the dials, the tmnblers 5 and 6 will be rotated to bring the openings 7 therein into alincment so that the arms 8 may be actuated therethrough and engage the pivoted locking members 9 to release the same. The sleeve 16 which is mounted upon the sleeve 18 is provided with a set screw 19 whereby the combination may be changed, if so desired. The sleeve 17 is also secured to the sleeve 18' on the dial .t by means of a set screw, the purpose of which is obvious from the above.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the larger dial 3 is provided with a number of graduations having numerals arranged opposite the graduations, while the inner dial is provided with letters and the graduations thereon are adapted to be arranged in registered position with the graduations upon the outer dial, so that upon the registering of any of the predetermined graduations, the openings 7 will. be brought into a registering position, so that the arms 8 may be moved therethrough and engage the pivoted locking members 9. ample, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the graduations upon the outer dial are indicated by the numerals 1 to 8 and the graduations upon the inner dial are inclicated by the letters A to H and it will be noted that the combination of the lock illustrated in the accompanying drawing is so arranged that the dials will be rotated until the figure 1 will be brought into registration with the character A and so on, so that the openings 7 will register to allow the arms 8 to move therethrough and engage the pivot ed locking members 9. It will be apparent that the registry lines indicating figure 1 and the character A will be brought into alinement with an arrow or other indicating point upon the face of plate 2 before the openings in the sleeves will be brought into alinement. Should it be desired to change the combination, the set screw 19 may be loosened to allow the rotary adjustment of the dial 3, so that the combination may be readily changed, if desired.
The locking members 9 are provided at their outer ends with hook portions 20 which are adapted to engage within the perforated keepers 21 formed upon the outer face of the plate 22, said plate being secured to thecover of the device in any suitable manner. The keeper members 21 are movable through suitable openings 23 which are formed, in one end of the casing, so that the keeper mem bers may be readily engaged with the hook portions 20. It will be apparent that the outer faces of the locking members 9 are beveled, as shown at 24:, so that when the keepers are inserted through the openings 23, the hook portions may be readily forced outwardly against the tension of the spring 15 and yieldably engage with the keepers 21.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing, that the operation of my improved lock is as follows :'After the dial 3 has been adjusted to any desired combination, the dials are rotated until the predetermined graduations are brought into alinement, which will position the openings 7, so that the arms 8 may pass therethrough and engage with the pivoted lockingmembers 9. After the dials have been brought into position, the handle member 11 is grasped so that the S-Shaped member 10 may be rotated and project the arms 8 through the openings 7. Upon the engagement of the arms 8, with the pivoted locking members 9, the hooks 2 will be disengaged from the keepers 21 to release'thecover of the boX or other device upon which the lock is applied.
It will be apparent from the above that my improved lock isextremely simple in construction, and can be manufactured and For eX- I placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.
\Vhile I have shown and preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the class described including movable tumblers, alined openings formed therein, means for rotating said tumblers and drawing the openings into alinement, pivotal locking members arranged upon each side of the tumblers, an S- shaped member arranged within said tumblers, outwardly projecting arms formed upon the ends of said member and adapted to be movably disposed through the openings in said tumblers and engaged with the pivotal locking members, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the class described including a casing, tumblers mounted within saidcasing, having openings formed therein, pivoted locking members arranged within the casing upon opposite sides of the tumblers, an S-shaped member arranged within said tumblers, movable arms carried by said Sshaped member and adapted to extend through said openings when in an alined position and engage the pivoted locking members, rotatable dials, and means connecting said dials with the tumblers in the casing, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A device of the class described including a casing, tumblers arranged within said casing, atransverse shaft extending through the tumblers and the casing, said tumblers having openings formed therein, pivoted locking members arranged within the casing upon opposite sides of the tumblers, an S- shaped member arranged within said tumblers and monnted upon said shaft, pivoted arms connected to the ends of the S-shaped member and adapted to extend through said. openings in the tumblers when in an alined position to engage the pivoted locking-member's, rotatable dials, and means connecting said dials with the tumblers whereby the rotation of the dials will bring the openings in the tumblers into alinement, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
