COMBINATION-LOCK.
To all w/bom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Harms HANFLIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlestown, in thecounty of Suffolk and State of lvlassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination- Locks, of which the fo-llowing is a specification.
This invention relates to combination locks, the object being to provide a combination lock which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which is so constructed that the same is especially Y adapted to be used on trunks and the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide a lock which is provided with a pair of parallel shafts on which are mounted dial operated tumblers co-acting with a sliding bolt member whereby it will be necessary for all of the tumblers to be brought into alinement before the bolt can be operated.
A further object of my invention is to provide novel means for securing the dial wheels upon the tumblers so that the same can be readily shifted in order to change the combination.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a lock which is so constructed that the same can be used upon a door as well as a trunk and the dial wheels are mounted that they can be easily operated from the inside or outside.
Still another object of my invention is to provide novel means for securing the shafts in position in the casing whereby they can be readily detached.
IVith these various objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all of which will be described fully hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a casing A provided with dovetailed vertical grooves A in its ends in which are mounted dove-tailed shaped sup- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

porting blocks B provided with oval shaped recesses in their faces as clearly shown at B in Figs. 7 in which are adapted to fit the similarly shaped ends C of shafts C which are provided with shoulders C2 formed by reducing the ends as shown at C3 on which are loosely mounted notched tumblers D which are provided with disk portions D having their peripheries toothed as shown at D2 over which are adapted to be placed dial rings E which are correspondingly toothed as shown at E so that the same can be readily removed or placed in position on the disk in order 'to change the combination of the lock as will be hereinafter fully described. These dials extend through slots A3 formed in the bottom of the casing A so that they can be readily operated from the inside when the casing` is in position in a. door or trunk. The shafts are provided with plates F one of which engages the bottom and the other the top for preventing.;1 the shaft from rotating when the tumblers are operated.
Mounted on the casing A is a face plate G which i's provided with slots G to receive the dials E and the plate is also provided with marks G2 so as to indicate the correct position of the letters on the dial in order that the combination can be worked, and it will be seen that by operating` the dial wheel so as to cause the respective tumblers of each shaft to be turned into alinement, the tumblers will be in such a position that the lock can be opened as will be hereinafter fully described.
The plate is provided with a central slot H through which extends a pin I of a slide I which is mounted on the face of the plate and said pin is secured in the body of a bolt member J which is provided with spaced arms .I2 havingheads .I3 adapted to work within the notches of the tumblers when the tumblers are turned into such a position that they will register with the same and these heads are adapted to fit within the annular grooves D4 formed in the tumblers so that it will be impossible for the bolt member to be moved until the tumblers of the respective shafts have been turned so as to aline with each other as it will be seen that when the heads of one pair o'f arms are in the grooves of the tumblers the opposite heads are against the tumblers.
Extending outwardly from the body of the sliding bolt member J is a hook shaped bolt J which is adapted to be moved by theV shafts mounted in said casing, tumblers slide eye over a slot G3 formed in the face 1 mounted on said shafts carrying dials explate Gr through which is adapted to extend the eye K of a hasp L and it will be seen that when the eye has been forced through the slot .G3 and the tumblers have been turned so as toi-aline with each other by pushing on the slide I the bolt member can be moved in either direction so that the bolt J can be moved in or out of the eye K of the hasp. The face plate G is preferably secured on the casing A by rivets as clearly shown and it is of course understood that vario-us other ways can be employed for securing the plate in position.
The operation of the device is as follows: Supposing that the casing has been secured in position within the mortise of a door or trunk in such a position with respect to the hasp that the eye will pass through vthe slot of the face plate of the casing, by
operating the dials so as to bring the turnblers into such a position that the notches of the same will register, the bolt can be moved on the face plate and after the bolt has been forced through. the eye of the-hasp by` turning any one of the dials, the tumblers will be moved so that it will be impossibleA to open the lock until the combination has again been worked so as to bring the tumblers in alinement and then by pushing on the slide I the bolt can be forced out of the eye so as to release the hasp.
From the'foregoing description, it will be seen that I havecprovided a combination lock which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which is provided with four operating dials for operating the respective tumblers which are so mounted with respect to the arms of the sliding bolt member that it will be necessary to turn all of the dials before the lock can be released and byoperating any one of the dials the bolt can be locked.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new 'and desire\to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. yThe combination with a casing provided with a hasp receiving opening, of a hook bolt slidably mounted within the casing, adjacent said opening, arms carried by said bolt provided with heads at their ends,
notched annularly'grooved tumblers co-acting with said heads, dials for operating said tumblers and means for operating said bolt. 24A lock comprising a casing provided with a bottom having slots formed'therein,
tending through said slots, a face plate arranged on said casing provided with slots to receivesaid dials, a bolt slidably mounted on the under side of said face plate, headed arms carried by said bolt co-act-ing with said tumblers, and a member slidably mounted on the face plate connected to said bolt for operating the same.
3. A lock comprising a casing provided with vertical dove-tailed shaped grooves in its ends, dove-tailed supporting blocks arranged in said grooves, shafts mounted in said blocks, notched tumblers mounted on said shafts, dials adjustably mounted on said tumblers, a face plate secured on said casing, a bolt member carried by said face plate, arms extending outwardly from said bolt member provided with heads co-acting with said tumblers, and means for operating said bolt.

A lock comprising a casing having spaced shafts detachably mounted therein provided with slioulders,1notched tumblers provided with annular grooves arranged on said shaft against said shoulders, said tumblers being provided with disks having toothed edges, dial rings provided with toothed portions co-acting with said disks, a face plate secured upon said easing, a bolt provided with spaced arms mounted under said face plate and coacting with said tumblers, and a slide mounted on said face plate connected to said bolt.
5. A lock comprising a casing having dove-tailed shaped grooves formedvin its ends, supporting blocks mounted in said grooves provided with recesses, shafts mounted in said recesses provided with reduced portions, notched tumblers mounted on the reduced 4portions of said shafts provided with annular grooves, dials adj ustably mounted on said tumblers, a face plate secured upon said casing provided with slots to receive said dials, a bolt member slidably mounted on the under side of said face plate, arms extending outwardly from said bolt member provided with heads adapted to fit within the annular grooves of the tumblers, and a slide mounted on said face plate connected to said bolt member for operating the same.
