HOOK AND EYE.
Application filed March 17, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN M. PEDERsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glyndon, in the county of Clay and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tofmake and use the same. p
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hooks and eyes, and has for its principal object to provide a device which will remain in its locked position until deliberately unhooked by the user.
Another object of this invention is to pro,- vide a hook and eye which cannot become accidentally unhooked.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective hook and eye which may be easily and cheaply constructed and which will effectively produce the desired result without causing undue inconvenience to the user.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of a hook and eye constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a front view in elevation showing the same in its half-locked position, Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a top plan view of F ig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the eye which serves to hold the hook designated generally by the numeral 2. The eve above refererd to, preferably comprises the main bodv portion 3 having formed integral therewith the outstanding arms 4 and 5 which are bent angularly as at 6 and are again bent as at 7 to form a parallel extending portion. The free terminals of the arms 4 and 5 are connected by the portion 8 which is of greater width than the width of either of the arms for a purpose which will be more fully hereinafter described. An extension 9 is formed on the lowermost arm 5 to form a stop and prevent the hook from slipping from the end when Specification of Letters Patent.

UNITED; STATES PATENT FFIQE.
the device is in use. At the point where the 7 portion 8 joins the arm 4 the outer corner is rounded as at 10 to prevent any danger of interference of the corner whenthe device is being put in place. A pluralityof apertures 11 are formed in the body portion 3 at spaced intervals and are adapted to form a means to secure the eye to a garment.
Having described the eye it now remains to describe the cooperating member which is designated generally by the numeral 2 and comprises the body portion 12 having formed therein a plurality of alined spaced apertures 13. An extension 14 is formed on the body portion 12 intermediate its ends andthe free end of theextension is bent as at 15 to form the right angular extending projection which is clearly illustrated in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 of the drawings. This angular extension terminates at its free end in the angular extension 16 which in turn terminates in the hook member 17 as best illustrated in Fig. 3.
It will be evident from the foregoing that in use, the hook is secured to one edge of the garment and the eve to the other. When it is desired to'hold the two edges together. the only operation necessary is to lace. the hook on the eye as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. Upon crowding the hook toward the portion 8 of the eye and swinging the end of the hook downwardly into the position illustrated in Fig. 1, it will be apparent that the hook portion 17 will engage the outer edge of the portion 8 and owing to the fact that the portion 8 completely fills the space between the angular extension on the member 14 and the hook member '17, it will be apparent that any danger of accidental dis placement of the two elements with relation to each other will be eliminated. In unhooking the device, it is evident that the reverse operation is performed which will permit the hook to assume the position illustrated in Fig. 2 and it will be apparent that by forcing the hook downwardly the portion 4 will slide through the space between the hook 17 and the bodv portion 14 on the hook element and permit the device to be removed. In order to prevent the hook from passing down too far on the member 8, the extension 9 is provided and forms a stop therefor, thus holding the hook illustrated in Fig. ,1 and eliminating any danger of accidental disconnection.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as Will fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. 7
Having thus described. my invention, I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising the combination With an eye comprising a body portion, arms formed integral with the body portion along one of its lateral extremities, a connecting portion connecting the free ends of the arms, said connecting portion being of greater width than the Width of the arms, and an extension on the lowermost arm, of a hook comprising a body portion, an extension intermediate the ends of the body portion and extending laterally therefrom, a bent back hook portion on the free end of the extension, said bent back hook portion being adapted to engage the widened portion on the eye and prevent the hook from becoming disconnected.
2. A device of the character described lateral extension, said bent back hook portion being adapted to engage the widened portion connecting the arms and be held in a:
place by the extension on one of the arms.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
