This invention reiates to certain new and useful improvements in sash looks;
The' primery' object ot the invention is to provide ari-automatic means employed with 4 the ordinary two-sash window and mounted upon the lower sash thereo'or the preventon of the opening of'either of the sashes but allowing u free movement in'closing the same.

A U-shaped bracket 12 is designed for ready atachnent to the top face of the lower seshby means of a screw 13 projecting through the bottom perforation land enterng the top rail of the' sash and. whereby the bracket is positioned, the channel thereof opening toward (and away from one side rall of the upper sash as heroin illustrated, while as willbe evident, the top of the bracket remains open.

The cam -17is provided with e redially-extending lever 18- heving adownwerdly-extending lug 19 on the bottom there'of for rpositioning the top of a, heiicai spring 20 postoned therearound and having its-bottom seated upon a similariug Qit-cerried'hy 'the base of the bracket 12 edjacent to the perforation 14 thereoi'.
F rom this Construction., it will he evident that with the bracket properly positioned upon the top of the lower sash the cam 17 is journaled for partial rotation therein by seating the projecting ends of the axle 16 within the notche's 15 and with the spring 20 :in its proper position, the expansion oli the letter normally engages the cam surface of the 'cylin'der 17 against the side rail of the upper sash 11. With such en engagement between the two sashes,- it will he readily npperent that any attempt to open the window by either lower-ing the upper sash or elevating the lower sash will result in more firmly wedging the cum 17 in contact with i the upper sash, thus firmiy looking the window closed. A perforation 22 being provided in the free end of the lever 18, e pul! cord 23 is serviceublv Secured ther-ein end adapted upon being pulled to move thelever 18 downwardly and thus rearwardly revolve the cam 17 in the direction denoted by the arrow in Fig. 1, whereby the lock is menually released and the sashes are free to move to an open position.

On the other hand, a releasing ot the cam rerluces the pressure of the journaled trunnions upon the notches 15 and allows 'a sliding movement of said trunnions toward the upper sash slidingly upon the faces 2%, it being 'evident that in ols-assembling the cam cylindcr'trom the bracket, that the trunnions are slid along the faces 24 completely out ot said notches. Every locking and releasing movement of the cam results in some siight movement of the trunnions upon the faces 24': end varies the contact pressure of the trunnons upon the notches 15 While the increase of pressure incident to the looking operation necessitetes e more firm seeting of the trunniohs in their journaled position&
