Description
UNITED STATES Parana j arm-a,
IMPROVEMENT IN THE PREPARATION OF ARCHIL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 1,194, dated June 27, 1854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ONAS EBERHARDT, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new mode of preparing the extract of archil and of making a clear and bright steam purple, without obtaining it by the means of any acid, after printing and steaming the same, of which the following is a specification.
Hitherto that color has been obtained, after printing and steaming, through the agency of lime-water to render it light and clear, which process becomes unnecessary by my inventi n.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe my process.
It consists in taking the extract of archil and combining it Wiiillfi given quantity of calcined magnesia, according to the shade I Want to produce. When these ingredients are well mixed together I can prepare the color at any time for the purpose of printing by thickening thecompound with an addition of gunrwaterthe greater the quantity of gum-water the lighter the shade will be.
To produce the darkshadethefollowing proportions are required: thirty-two ounces of extract of archil; four and a half ounces of calcined magnesia; thirty-four ounces of gum- Water.
To obtain the light shade the same proportions of extract of archil and calcined magnesia are used, augmenting the gum-water to seventy ounces.
\Vhen printed, the impression is steamed and washed.
The color may be printed on silk, woolen, or barege.
The above is the Whole of my process.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The production of a bright and clear steampurple, without the use of any acid, after it is being printed and steamed, as herein described, using for that purpose the aforesaid method.
JONAS 'EBERHARDT.
