Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. WHITE, OF ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
lMPROV ED PROCESS FOR PRINTING LQNG-NAPPED FABRICS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 11,540, dated August 15, 1854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WHI E, of Roxbury, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Finishing Nap Goods or Fabrics; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described in the following specification.
In carrying out my invention I take a piece of white cotton or other cloth, which is made with a long nap and finished in the usual way, with the grain or fibers of the nap laid in one direction. By means of teasels or brushes, or other suitable means, I'raise up said nap and lay its fibers in a direction contrary to that in which they were originally finished or laid. I then, bymeans of blocks or types, or other method, print upon the surfacesot' thenaps so raised, and in one or more colors, such device or devices, figure or figures as it may be desirable to produce thereon. When this has been done and the coloring-matter has become dry I return the nap or restore it to the direction in which it was originally made; and this I do by means of teasels or combs in a manner well understood by workmen skilled in the art of raising and laying a nap upon cloth. By this process of finishing; the cloth the lighter fibers of the color are made to overlap the darker ones, so as to produce a beautiful soft blending or shading of the colors together.
What 1 claim as my invention is The above-described process of coloring and finishing a napped fabric after the fibers'have been laid in one direction by the ordinary or common process of finishing them, the said process consisting in raising and turning the fibers over and down upon the cloth in a contrary direction, and printing figures or devices upon them in one or more colors, and, finally, returning the fibers or restoring them to their original positions or directions, substantially as set forth. 1
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my signature this 20th day of July, A. D. 1854.
. WM. A. WHITE.
