To all whom t may concern Be it known that- I, EDWARD L. MCCLA'IN, a citizen of the United States Aof America, and resident of Greenfield, county of Highland, and State of Chio, have` invented certain new and `useful Improvements in Horse-Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This `application is a division of an application for United-States Letters Patent,

The hook is secured to the pad by means of a staple. The staple is so combined with j the` padand the hook, that the continuous and rounded portions of the staple contact with the pad, and the broken and roughened `parts thereof are housed by a portion offthe hook, so as to prevent the vstaple cutting the covering of the pad. Hook A consists of a ring-shaped strip of metal having parallel edges,l and has `near one of its ends a vsmall'cylindrical portion a, which forms a vjournal loop for journaling it upon staples and for housing the broken and roughened ends of the staples. The back B of the staple contacts with the inner cover of the pad and is substantially parallel to the edge CZ of the pad D. `The prongs `b b of the staple stand at a distanceapart equal to the width of the strip of metal forming the hook, and project through the pad,jad"

In use, since the back of the staple has a broad bearing upon the inner` cover of the pad, and has no broken edges in Contact therewith, the pull upon the hook is evenly distributed over the cover, and there is consequently no cutting action of the back of the hook upon the inner cover.` Since the prongs contact with the ends of the journal loop and the ends of the prongs are housed they have no opportuouter covering of the j position of the staple and the hook likewise holds the hook from sliding longitudinally of the pad.

The combination of a horse pad, a hook nity o-f cutting the `having a cylindrical journal loopcontacting 2.y The combination of a horse pad, ahook having a journal loop at one end contacting with the pad, and a staple whose prongs are` spaced apart a distance equal to the width of the journal loop, whose back contacts With the inner surface of the pad, and
l whose prongs project through the pad upon opposite sides ofthe journal loop and are turned inward Within the journal loop.
3. The combination ofahorse pad, ahook and a staple, the hook co-nsisting of a ringshapedstrip of metal having at onefend a cylindrical journal loop contacting with the pad, and the staple being U-shaped, of a span equal to the width of the journal loop andv having its back contacting with the pad andv its prongs'projecting through thepad upon opposite ends of and bent down into thejournal loop.`
