  • My invention relates toimprovements in wire gripping devices, with more particular reference to devices used in connection with heavy electrical transmission, and the object of my invention is to devise a simple, strong and effective means which can be quickly placed on a Wire at any point to provide a firm grip, without fear of injuring the wire, to which grip the wire tightening apparatus may be attached when running the wire between two points, instead of, as at the present time, hitching a chain or other similar means around the wire to provide the grip, which is liable to kink and other wise damage the wire, and which does not permit of the wire being stretched as tightly as is possible with my device.

  • FIG. 1 is the pulling bar of my device, formed preferably as shown in Fig. 3 and provided with an opening 2 at one end so as to permit of a shackle 3 being attached, if desired, as shown in Fig. 1.
  • These side plates are formed preferably as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each of them having the forward edge out in proximity to the upper end to form the forwardly facing notch 10, and having openings provided at suitable positions whereby they may be engaged freely on the pins 4 and 5 of the pulling bar 1 and the pins of the lower gripping member, hereinafter mentioned.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE lVnsLEY Marx, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Gripping Devices, of which the following is. a specification.
My invention relates toimprovements in wire gripping devices, with more particular reference to devices used in connection with heavy electrical transmission, and the object of my invention is to devise a simple, strong and effective means which can be quickly placed on a Wire at any point to provide a firm grip, without fear of injuring the wire, to which grip the wire tightening apparatus may be attached when running the wire between two points, instead of, as at the present time, hitching a chain or other similar means around the wire to provide the grip, which is liable to kink and other wise damage the wire, and which does not permit of the wire being stretched as tightly as is possible with my device. 1 attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device, shown in the open position and looking on the back end thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing my device closed on a wire. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the pulling bar. Fig. 1 is an end view of the upper gripping member. Fig. 5 is an end view of the lower gripping member.
Similar figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
1 is the pulling bar of my device, formed preferably as shown in Fig. 3 and provided with an opening 2 at one end so as to permit of a shackle 3 being attached, if desired, as shown in Fig. 1.
at and 5 are pins rigidly secured into the pulling bar 1, which pins extend outwardly from the bar on each side to form bearings on which the side plates 6-7 and 89 are fulcrumed. These side plates are formed preferably as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each of them having the forward edge out in proximity to the upper end to form the forwardly facing notch 10, and having openings provided at suitable positions whereby they may be engaged freely on the pins 4 and 5 of the pulling bar 1 and the pins of the lower gripping member, hereinafter mentioned.
11 is the lower gripping member, which is formed preferably as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, its gripping face being made concave and either smooth or rough, as called for by the requirements of service.
12-43 and 14-15 are pins secured into, and extending outwardly from, the member 11, which pins are adapted to engage freely through the openings, hereinbefore mentioned, of the side plates, and are threaded and provided with suitable nuts 16 and washers 17, all as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5.
18 is the upper gripping member, which is formed as shown in Fig. 4:, having its gripping face made concave and either smooth orrough, as required.
1920 and 21 22 are pins secured into, and extending outwardly, from the member 18, these pins being adapted to be engaged in the notches 10 when the device is as sembled.
23 are plate springs secured to the front edges of the side plates 6 and 7 and adapted to bear against the pins 19-20, whereby the same will be retained in the notches 10 and thus the upper gripping member 18 will be kept in place, while, at the same time, these springs provide a means whereby the upper gripping member may be easily removed from place, if desired, as will be more fully hereinafter described.
24 represents a portion of a power transmission wire.
Having indicated the principal parts of my invention, I will now describe the mannor in which it is used. When it is desired to take a grip on a wire my device is taken, fully assembled, and the side plates swung into the position shown in Fig. 1, thus separating the upper and lower gripping members 11 and 18 respectively and allowing the end of the wire to be passed along between the members 11 and 18. The side plates are then swung downward, as shown in Fig. 2, closing the gripping members 11 and 18 on the wire, and it will be seen that if the tightening apparatus, such as a block and tackle, be hooked to the shackle 3 and a pull exerted on the bar 1, the gripping members will take a firm hold on the Wire 2-1, this hold becoming stronger as the pull on the bar 1 is increased. It is sometimes necessary to take a grip on a Wire Which is already fastened at both ends, and in order to do this the upper gripping member 18 is removed so as to allow the lower gripping member 11 to engage the Wire. To remove the member 18 it is simply pressed forward so that the pins 19 and 9-0 will compress the springs sufliciently to allow the pins l9-20 and 2122 to clear the notches 10, after which the member 18 may be separated from the rest of the device. The lower gripping member 11 may then be engaged against the under side of the Wire, and the upper gripping member 18 then returned and sprung into place again to grip the wire, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be seen, therefore, that I have devised a strong, practical, and simple means which can be quickly and easily placed on a Wire at any point to provide a firm grip to which Wire tightening apparatus may be attached, and Which Will not kink or other- Wise injure the Wire. It Will be seen, further, that l have devised a Wire gripping device which is adapted for use on the lightest or the heaviest form of Wires, and which can be used on Wires made of any kind of material.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a Wire gripping device, Wire engaging bar members, lever plates fulerumed on the lower bar member at each end at each side thereof, and having a pivotal engagement with the other bar member at the upper end and a pull bar pivotally connected to the lower end of the lever plates, as and for the purpose specified.
'2. In a wire gripping device, Wire engaging bar members, lever plates fulcrumed' on the lower bar member at each end at each side thereof, and having a pivotal detachable engagement With the other bar mem her at the upper end and a pull bar pivotally connected to the lower end of the lever plates, as and for the purpose specified.
