Application filed March 29, 1913. Serial No. 757,584.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CONSTANDINOS K. Karat-mus, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knox, in the county of Benson, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to toys and has for an object to provide a toy in the nature of a soldier mounted upon a cannon, the soldiers arm being adapted to be intermittently raised and carrying a fire arm, there being means for ei ecting a sharp noise when the hrm of the soldier reaches its highest point, to simulate dischargeof the fire arm.
With the above objects in view the 111- vention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims.

Rcferrinr now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates in general a toy cannon on which is mounted an upright toy soldier 11 formed hollow, and having on one side an arm 12 which is grasping a pistol 13, the arm being pivoted on the body of the soldier and normally being held down along the side of the soldier but being intermittently raised forwardly to horizontal position.
For raising the arm 12, a shaft 14 is journaled in the body of the soldier and is rotated from the axle 15 of the cannon by means of a chain drive 16. The shaft is equipped with radially projecting pins 17. The arm 12 is provided on the inner side with an integral shaft 18 which is j ournaled in the body of the soldier, and is further equipped in rear of the shaft with a pin 19 that is disposed parallel with the shaft and projects through a slot 20 in the body of the soldier. A helical spring 21 is con upwardly, the pins 17 riding ofi from the arm pin 19 when the arm reaches horizontal position, and the controlling spring 21 immediately returning the arm to normal position.
For producing a sharp noise every fourth time the arm 12 reaches horizontal position, thereby simulating discharge of the fire arm, a cam 22 is fixed to the chain driven shaft 1 1. An upright leaf spring 23 is secured at the lower end to the body of the soldier and bears at the upper end upon the periphery of the cam. A hammer 2 1 is formed integral with the spring below the cam. A stationary drum 25 in the nature of a hollow casing is fixed to the body of the soldier, the cam serving to move outwardly the spring and release the latter just as the arm 12 reaches horizontal position whereby the spring immediately impinges the hammer 24 against the drum 25 with a resultant sharp noise.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided an extremely interesting toy of the mechanical type which when drawn along upon a floor, table or the like, will operate to simulate the charge of a piece of artillery with the gunner discharging his fire arm at intervals at the foe.
W hat is claimed, is
1. A tov includin a cannon an inri 'ht soldier carried thereby, one arm of said soldier being pivoted at the shoulder, means for intermittently raisin said arm to horizontal position, said arm carrying a fire arm, and means for effecting a sharp noise at certain times that said arm arrives at horizontal position.
2. The combination in a toy of a revoluble wheeled axle, a puppet above said axle and having a pivoted arm, a shaft in said puppet driven by said axle and cooperating means by the interaction of which with said shaft the said arm is raised to a horizontal position, a spring for automatically returning said arm to downward position at the side of said puppet, said arm carrying'a fire arm, In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, a block drum on said puppet, and a cam in the presence of two Witnesses. on sa d shaft arranged to engage and move GONSTANDINOS KON.
