To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM J. SoHANTz, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Orrville, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Organ- Blowers, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a blower, so constructed that the noise caused by the running of the blower and other movable parts will be deadened; second, to provide an organ blower so constructed that it can be easily set up or placed in position, and third, to provide for the automatic movement of the closure for the fan chamber as between said chamber and the motor chamber. These objects together with other objects, readily apparent to those skilled in the art, I attain by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although my invention may be embodied in a variety of other mechanical forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a top view showing parts in section, also showing the cover of the intake extension open or turned back. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the parts properly assembled, the motor casing removed and its cover open. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the motor casing. Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view. of the self adjusting closure between the motor chamber and the fan chamber. Fig. 6 is an edge view of one of the adjustable motor supports. Fig.7 is a perspective View of one of the motor supports.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In. the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the base bars or supports which are supported upon a suitable foundation and upon which is connected in any convenient and well known manner the platform 2, which platform is for the purpose of providingasupport and proper'foundation for the motor 3, which motor may be of any desired or well known make or style suitable for the purpose of operating a blower for organ purposes. Upon the base bars 1 or their equivalents is located the blower casing or housing 4, which casing or housing is formed of sufficient size to contain the fans 5 and 6, which fans are fixedly mounted upon the shaft 7, which shaft is connected to the motor shaft 8, or said motor shaft formed of sufficient length to provide for properly attaching the fans 5'and 6 for the purpose ofproviding means for locating suitable sound deadening flan es.
The fan chamber 4 is provided with the partition 9, to which artition the sound deadening flanges or hlades 10 are conneoted and are located between the fans 5 and 6. To the end of the fan chamber 4 opposite to the end to which the motor is located, is connected the air intake extension 11, which air intakeextension is located directly opposite the air intake or eye 12.
. Upon the sides and bottom of the air intake extension 11 are located a series of sound deadening flanges 13, which flanges are spaced from each other, thereby dividing the intake extension 11 into a series of communicating chambers or spaces. For the purpose of locating sound deadenin flanges upon the sides, bottom and top 0 the air intake extension 11, the hinged top or cover 14 is provided with a series of sound dead ening flanges 15, which are preferably located in the same spaced relationship as the flanges 13, so that when the cover is in its closed or normal position as illustrated in F ig. 1, the sound deadening flanges will be in practically the same vertical planes.
For the purpose of sup orting the bearing 16, which carries the shat 7, the bracket 17 or its equivalent is provided and is attached in any convenient and well known manner to the fan or blowercasing 4. For the purpose of properly closing the opening 18 located between the motor chamber 19 and the fan chamber 4, I provide the frame 20 and a plate 21, said frame and plate being preferably formed of the same relative size. The frame 20 is securely attached to the blower or fan casing 4 in such a manner that it will be held in fixed position with reference to the blower or fan casing 4. To the frame 20 is attached the flexible band 22, which band is also connected to the plate 21, by which arrangement the plate 21 is free to move inany direction with reference to the fixed frame 20. The purpose of providing for this relative movement of the plate 21 is to allow the motor shaft 7 to be adjusted so as to bring said shaft in proper alinement with reference to the motor 3 at the time the blower is installed or to compensate for any slight variances by reason of the usual wear or uneven settlement of the foundation upon which the blower proper is mounted.
For the purpose of deadening the sound of the motor the plate 21 is provided withthe strip 23, which strip ispreferably formed of leather or like material and is provided with an aperture 24, through which the motor shaft 7 passes, said aperture being formed of such a size that it will properly fit the shaft 7. It will be understood that by providing the bellows-like connection between the frame 20 and the plate 21 that said plate 21 together with the strip 23 is free to move with any lateral or vertical adjustment or movement of the shaft 7 and at alltimes permitting the strip 23 to follow the movements of the shaft 7, other than the rotary movement of said shaft.
It will be understood that the plate 21 should be provided with the aperture 25 through which the shaft 7 passes. By the mechanical arrangement just above described it will be noted that there Will be at no time a great amount of sound communication as between the motor chamber and the fan chamber proper, reference of course, being had to the ordinary wear of the strip 23, but this wear is easily repaired from time to time by the substitution of new strips, but by reason of the flexible connection of the plate 1 the "wear will be uniform and much less rapid than it would be if the plate 21 and the strip 23 were held in fixed positions with reference to the casing 4.
For the purpose of providing means for properly inclosing the motor 3 the detachable casing 26 is provided, which is connected at its bottom to the platform 2 and at one of its vertical ends to the fan casing 4:, preferably by means of screws, so that the same can be easily detached for any desired purpose. For the purpose of easy access to the motor for any desired purpose without removing the casing 26 the hinged cover 27 is provided, which is preferably connected to the fan casing 4 and in such a position that it will properly close the top of the casing 26, which cover lies upon the top of the casing and is connected by the hinges 28. It is well understood that as between the motor andthe fan the adjustment should be accurate at all times and in order to provide means for adjusting the motor vertically independent of the blower or fan chamber, the motor is mounted upon the supports 29,
which supports are adjustably connected to the lower or base supports 30, which base supports are securely connected to the platform 2. Suitable flanges 31 and 32 are provided for proper adjustment.
lhe supports 29 are provided with elongated slots 33, through which elongated slots the clamping bolts 34.- are passed, said clamping bolts being for the purpose of holding the two sections 29 and 30 of the supports proper in proper relative position with reference to each other; but when it is desired to change the adj ustment, the clamping bolts 34 are loosened and the screw 34? is rotated to lower or elevate the same so as to lower or elevate the heads upon which heads the lugs 36 rest, thereby providing a positive and fixed adjustment as between the motor support members 29 and 30.
For the purpose of conveying air from the blower or fan chamber the casing 4t is provided with the aperture 37 from which leads a pipe to the organ. This pipe is not illusstrated nor the method of attaching the same as the construction of the pipe and the method of attaching are common and well known.
It will be understood that by providing means for closing or cutting off the sound of the motor as between the motor chamber and the fan chamber and-by providing the air intake extension 11 with a series of spaced sound deadening flanges, the sound produced by the motion of the motor and the fan will be greatly reduced and practically deadened, thereby producing a motor and blower for organs which will beprac- 95 tically silent in its operation.
The air intakeextension 11 is provided at its outer end with the valves 38, which are so constructed that they will swing inward as indicated in dotted lines when the air is drawn into the extension. These valves are of the usual construction and no detailed description is deemed necessary.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an organ blower of the class described, the combination of a motor mounted upon adjustable supports, a detachable casing adapted to inclose said motor, a fan chamber, a motor shaft extended into the fan chamber and fans mounted thereon, a frame fixed to the fan chamber casing, a plate provided with a motor shaft aperture, said plate yieldingly connected to the frame fixed to the fan casing and an apertured strip fixed to the yielding plate and located upon the-motor shaft and an air intake extension communicating with the fan chamber.
2. In an organ blower of the class described, the combination of a motor shaft mounted upon adjustable supports, a detachable casing adapted to inclose said motor, a fan chamber, amotor shaft extended into the fan chamber and fans mounted thereon, a frame fixed to the fan chamber casing, a plate provided with a motor shaft aperture, said plateyieldingly connected to the frame fixed to the fan casing and an apertured strip fixed to the yielding plate and located upon the motor shaft and an air intake extension communicating With the fan chamber, said air intake extension provided With sound deadening flanges.
3. In an organ blower, the combination of a motor chamber, a fan chamber, a motor shaft, fans mounted upon the motor shaft and locatedwithin the fan chamber, a plate yieldingly connected to the fan chamber casing and adapted for adjustment with the ad ustment of the motor and motor shaft and an air intake extension.
