set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to a Ventilating device, and particularly to the provision of a portable, self-contained, automatic device vfor Ventilating a room.
An object of this invention is to provide l a Ventilating device, which is compact, readily portable, and so shaped and constructed as to enable its ready location at an aper* ture provided by an open window. A fur ther object of this invention is to provide a device vof the type characterized which is selflcontained, and which will ,automatically regulate the degree of Ventilatio'ndto the end of maintaining a substantially uniform temperature in a room. Still further objects ofthe invention relate tothe pro- Vision 'of a Ventilating device lwhich is simple in construction, inexpensive to {manuacture, easily installed, and elicient in operation.
Stated briefiy, the invention comprises a frame shaped to be positioned at the aperture provided by an open window, such frame providing an 'air passage theref through, a damper device for controlling the flow of air through said'passage, and thermosensitive means carried by the frame for controlling said damper device, said frame and the parts carriedv therebyconstituting a complete, automatic Ventilating unit. v
The invention is susceptible of embodiment in a variety of mechanical forms, two of which, for the purpose of illustration, have beenshown on the accompanying drawings. But it is to be expressly understood that the drawings are for purposes of illustration only, and are not to be construedas a definition of the limits of the invention, reference being had to the ap.- pended claims for that purpose.

embodiment illustrated comprising a rectangular box-like housing provided with a lagged top 2, an open rear `face 3, and a front face'shown as closed by any preferred form of grill 4f.
Mounted within this frame 1 is a damper device adapted to control the flow of air through the passage rovided by the interior of the frame. ny suitable form of damper device may be employed. In the embodiment illustrated a plurality of shutters 5 are severally mounted by vertical pivots 6 to open and close the passage provided by the box-like frame 1, said shutters -being each provided with an arm 7 pivotally connected to an operating bar 8.

Means are preferably provided for ad` justing the thermosensitive means to predetermine the initial temperature at which the same shall begin to respond to temperature changes to operate the damper device. ln the form shown, an adjustable spring is connected to the lever 13 to oppose movement of the movable end wall 11 of the vessel 9. To this end, lever 13 is provided with a laterally extending arm 16 to the outer end of which is connected one end of a 'coil spring 17 the opposite end of this spring being carried by a block 18 mounted upon a screw-threaded spindle 19. Said spindle 19 extends tol a position where it may be'manually operated at will, the same being shown vas provided with a squared end 2O which may be engaged by an operating handle. Block 18' is preferably provided with a pointer member 21 shown as extending through a slot in the casing 22 which is desirably provided"for protecting the thermosensitive meansl from injury. The exterior of the casing 22\adjav cent the slot in the side thereof ma`y\`con veniently be provided with indicia whereby the spring 17 may be readily set to obtain a predetermined initial actuation of the damper device. When a casing 22 is provided for surrounding the thermosensitive means, it should be so constructed as to readily admit air from the room to such thermosensitive means, as by providing its walls with a pluralitj7 of apertures as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 the expansible and collapsible vessel 9 is mounted on a.
bracket 10 positioned within a compartment provided by a partition 23 near one end of the frame. Air at room temperature has free access to the thermosensitive device through the apertures in the grill 4 (see Fig. 6) covering said compartment. To prevent the leakage of air between the window-sash 30 and the top of the frame 1, which would adversely affect the operation of the thermosensitive device, the upper edge of the rear face oi' said frame is preferably provided with a strip of felt, rubber or other suitable material 31, whereby,..the. frame 1 will make an air-tight connection with the window-sash, while still permitting theready raising and lowering of the latter.

Such expansion, however,'is opposed by the tension of the spring 17 until that temperature is reached at which it' has been predetermined the thermosensitive means shall assume controlof the damper. Thereafter, a further rise of temperature within the room causes an expansion of the vessel 9, with a resultant movement of the lever 13 (or-13') against the tension of the spring 17, operating bar 8 to move shutters 5 about their` pivots and open the passage through the frame 1. A further increase in temperature j results in a further increase in the opening of the shutters, a decrease in temperature resulting in a closing of the shutters. Thereby, the amount of air {iowing through the passage provided by the frame 1 is auto matic'ally controlled in Aaccordance with the needs of the room, as determined bythe temperature of the air in the same( F urthermore, owing vto the construction and arrangement of this Ventilating device, it will be perceived that there is no 4interference with the opening and closing of the Window.
While the Ventilating device has been shown as positioned at the loWer end of the Window, it is apparent it could equally Well be positioned at the top ofthe Window, or
two Ventilating devices could be provided, one at the bottom and one at the top. lVhile the frame has been shown as snugly fitting in the vvindovsT casing, it Will be understood that this is not essential, as the frame may be made of any shorter length and the space between the end of the frame and the Window casing-left open, or the frame may be provided with an adjustable extension plate for closing this space.- It will also be apparent that the height of the frame constitutes no part of the invention; for the same may be selected in accordance With the maximum quantity of air that `it is desired shall liow through the Ventilating device When the damper device is Wide open.
What is claimed is:
l. A self-contained, portable, automatic Ventilating-device comprising a frame adapted to be positioned at the aperture provided by ,an open Window, said frame providing an air-passage therethrough, a damper device for controlling the flow of air through said passage, and a thermosensitive device carried by said frame and operatively connected to said damper device, said frame and the parts carried thereby constituting a complete, automatic ventilating unit. 4

A self-contained, portable, automatic Ventilating-device comprising a frame adapted to be positioned at the aperture provided by an open Window without in-l terfering with the opening and closing of the Window, said frame providing an airpassage therethrough, a damper device for controlling the flow of air through said passage,`an'd a thermosensitive device carried by said frame and operatively connected -to said damper device, said frame and the parts carried thereby constituting a complete automatic Ventilating unit.
3. A self-contained, portable, automatic Ventilating-device comprising a frame adapted to be positioned at the aperture provided by an open Window, said frame providing an air-passage therethrough, a'
damper device for controlling the flow o f air through said passage, and a thermosens1- tive device carried by said frame and subjected to the temperature of the air in the room, said thermosensitive device being op* eratively connected to said damper device, said frame and theJ parts carried thereby constituting a complete, automatic ventilating unit.
4. A self-contained, portable, automatic Ventilating-device comprising a frame adapted to be positionedy at the apertureprovided by an open Window, said frame l providing lan air-passage therethrough, a sealing strip carried by said ,frame for predamper device for controlling the flow of air through said passage, and a thermosensitive device carried by said frame and operatively connected to said damper device, said frame and the parts carried thereby constituting a complete, automatic ventilating unit.y

A self-contained, portable, automatic ventilatingdevice comprising a frame adapted to be positioned at the aperture provided by an open Window, said frame providing an air-passage therethrough, a damper device for controlling the liovv of air through said passage, a thermosensitive device carried by said Jframe and operatively connected to said damper device, and an inclosure for said thermosensitive device provided with aperturesl for the admission of the air of the room thereto, said frame and the parts carried thereby constituting a complete, automatic ventilating unit.

A self-contained, portable, automatic Ventilating-device comprising a `frame adapted to be positioned at the aperture provided by an open Window, said frame providing an air-passage therethrough, a damper device for controlling the flow of air ,through said passage, a thermosensitive'deventilatingdevice comprising a frame adapted to be positioned at the aperture lprovided by an open Window, said `frame providing an air-passage therethrough, a damper device for controlling the flow oir' air through said passage, and an expansible and collapsible vessel charged with -a volatile thermosensitive fluid carried by said frame and operatively connected to said damper device, said frame and the parts carried thereby constituting a complete, automatic Ventilating unit,

A self-contained, portable, automatic ventilatingdevice comprising a traine adapted to be positioned at the aperture provided by an open Window, said frame providing an air-passage therethrough, a damper device for controlling the flow of air K through said passage, an expansible and collapsible vessel charged with a volatile therl`Inosensitive fluid carried by said frame and operatively connected to said damper device,
p iaaies v a spring opposing expansion of-said vessel,
and means for adjusting said spring to predetermine the temperature at which said vessel begins to expand, said frame andi` the parts carried thereby constituting a complete, automatic Ventilating unit.

A self-contained, portable, automatic, Ventilating-device comprising a frame adapted t'o be positioned at the aperture provided by an open Window, said frame providing a horizontal air-passage extending directly therethrough, a damper device for controlling the How of air through said passage, and a thermosensitive device carried by said frame and operatively connected to said damper device, said frame and the parts carried thereby constituting a complete, automatic ventilating unit.
