VENTILATOR.

Be it known that I, FRANK D. SAMMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carlinville, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in ventilators, of which the following is la specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ventilators and has for an object the provision of a device for permitting the escape of heated or damp air, gases and the like from a room or other enclosure.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the device may be regulated, to regulate the amount of air passing therethrough, s0 that adjustment may be made in accordance with the amount of ventilation required.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a ventilator of simple construction, which may be easily installed and readily and quickly adjusted for proper regulation.

the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the ventilator partly open.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the outer casing or sleeve.
Figure 5 is a plan View of the regulator closure showing the spring arms in extended position.
Referring in detail t0 the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as comprising a casing 10 which is of hollow cylindrical form and open at its top and bottom ends. The upper end of the casing is provided with a cone-shaped cover 11 which is secured to and spaced from the end of the casing by means of spaced vertically arranged arms 12.
The lower end of the casing 10 is surrounded by a sleeve 13 of relatively short length, the lower end of mthis sleeve being flush with the lower end of the casing 10. This sleeve is spaced from the outer wall of the casing, having Z-shaped brackets 13a at its lower end for this purpose, and provides an annular air passage 14 which communicates with the interior of the casing 10 through the medium of spaced openings 15. .The upper end of the sleeve is closed by a wall 17 which surrounds the casing.
Extending laterally from the lower end of the sleeve 18 is an annular liange 18, the latter being adapted to be positioned against the ceiling 19 of the room or enclosure so as to surround the opening 20 through which the ventilator is extended. rlhe ventilator is held in place through the medium of straps 21, which have one of their ends secured to the casing 10 as shown at 22 and their opposite ends bent over and secured to suitable supporting members 23, carried by the ceiling rafters.
For the purpose of closing the lower end of the ventilator there is provided a disklike closure 24 of a sufficient diameter to close both the bottom of the casing 1() and the lower end of the air passage 14. This disk or closure 24 has secured thereto oppositely disposed spring arms 25, the latter being formed of wire and bent intermediate their ends to-provide a loop 26. Each arm of the loop is coiled as shown at 27 so as to increase the spring action of the arms, while the extremities of these arms are received within an elongated opening 28 formed in a plate 29 secured to the disk or closure 24. The arms 25 frictionally and yieldingly engage the inner wall of the casing 10 and the closure may be moved to a position to entirely close the bottom of both the casing and the passage 14, or the latter may be partly or entirely opened by moving the disk or closure outward. By means of the annular passage 14, which communicates with the interior of the casing 10, the suction or draft through the ventilator may be initially started and will be afterward increased through the casing 10 and thus add to the efliciency of the device.
The invention is susuceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is2 A ventilator comprising a hollow Cylindrical casing open at each end7 a coneshaped member secured to and spaced from one end of the easing, a sleeve surrounding the lower end of the casing and providing and communicating with the interior of the casing by means of openings formed in the latter and a closure adjustably and removably located in the lower end ofthe casing for controlling the same and the open end of the sleeve.
