Description

lidtdi tatra ALFRED BOOTH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS;
Letters Patent No; 111,722, dated February 14,1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN REFRlGERATiNG OYSTER-CANS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari: of 'che same.
'To all whom 'it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALFRED BOOTH, ot' Chicago, in the county ot' Cook and State ot' Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements t0 the Refrigerating Oyster-Can for which Letters Patent of the United States, No. 103,551, were issued to me, bearing date May 31, 1870; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereofLwhich will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure v1 is a plan view of myimproved reigeratin g oyster-can, and f Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section ot' the same. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
My invention has for its object to provide sheetmetal reiigerat-ing-cans for. oysters in bulk, with a guard to protect the ends and cor-ners t-lzereot' during transportation, and so constructing them as more etfectually to prevent the heat ot' the sun and of heated atmosphere affecting thecontents ot' the can.
In the accompanying drawing- A is a sheet-metal can ot' suloient size to containl Iseveral gallons ot' oysters, having-flanged edges, a u., projecting from the ends of the can.
1n the center of the can, extending from the top to the bottom, or from side tO-Side, is formed a rectangular ice-chamber, B, which is opened at the top, and having four sides exposed within the body and to the contents ofthe can.
The can proper is filled with oysters through the opening C,.which is securely closed by means of the screw C'. A
The ice-chamber B is closed by means of a wooden cover, D, made of suitable4 dimensions, so as to tit snugly within the flanged edges of the end of the can over the opening into the ice-chamber and upon and against the screw-capC', and projecting alittle b eyond the ends of the flanges, and secured thereto so as to be easily removed. 1
At the other or opposite end of the can-is also firmly and securely fastened a similar wooden cover or guard, D. .Said covers or guards D also-serve the purpose to protect the ends ot' said can from injury during transportation.
After the can is filled with oysters, the ice-chamber with ice, and the covers or guards secured thereto by tacks or screws through the flanged edges, I cover or envelop the sides of' said can, when desired, with a case or covering, E, of felt, woolen cloth, or other suitable material, so as to absorb any moisture that may accumulate on the outer sides ofthe can, and to assist in producing evaporation, thereby more elfectually preventing the heat of the sun and heated atmosphere aifecting the cont-ents of the ca-n during transportation.
Having described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a sheet-metal refrigeratingcan for oysters in bulk, ot' the flanged ends a a and the wooden covers or guards D, or their equivalents, substantially as described.
2. rlhe combination ot' the case or covering E with the can, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specilication of my invention signed by me this 29th day of November, 1870.
` ALFRED BOOTH.
