'MORITZ ALTMANN, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Letters Patent No. 111,716, dated February 14,1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER TO RESEMBLE CLOTH- The Schedule referted. 1: in these Lettm Patent and wishing part b: the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOBITZ ALTMANN, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Process of Producing a new kind of Leather with a Surface Similar to Cloth; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear andexact description thereof.
The nature and object of my invention are toproduce aleather of any kind, having a surface similar or closely resembling cloth of any desirable color; and
. it consists in the application of certain chemical compounds to the surface of any kiud'o leather, producing any kind of color desired.
I will now proceed to more specifically describe my inventiomwhich is as follows v i I first take anykindof leather and color the face of it on either side with any desirable color, then allow it to dry. I next coat it with a solution of glue-water, gum-water, tragacauth-water, or any other substance of this kind,' in order to fill up the pores of the leather;
then I apply a coating of glycerine, for the purpose of counteracting any possible chance of cracking, and also to replace the natural pliability of the leather.-
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-' v v l. The process substantially herein described of .pro-
ducing a new kind of leather with 'a surface similar to cloth.
2. As a new article of .rnanufacture, the leather herein-described, with a cloth surface, for the purpose set forth.
MORITZ ALTMANN. Witnesses:
Vromon HAG-MANN,
AUG. BASTERT.
