IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER PRODUCTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,548, dated November 11, 18721.; application filed April 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. KENDALL, of Foxborough, Norfolk county, State of Massachusetts, have invented a Substitute for Oil- Cloth Carpeting, of Which the following is a specification This invention relates to certain improve ments in the manufacture of articles from'paf per pulp and sponge, for Which Letters Patent Were granted me on the 6th day of August, 1872, andnumbered 130,222; and the object of the present invention is to furnish a cheap and durable substitute for oil-cloth carpeting; and it consists of a fabric composed of sponge and paper, as hereinafter described, Which is treated with linseed-oil and ornamented on its surface by printing or painting, as will be more fully described hereafter. q
The drawing illustrates a face view of my substitute for oil-cloth carpeting, the square portions intended to illustrate one manner of ornamenting the surface of the same.
The paper pulp and sponge is rst saturated with linseed-oil, and it is then subjected to pressure, either by passing it through pressure-rolls, or Within a suitable press, or other- Wise, to express therefrom the excess of oil,
and to compress it into a compact and close shape, and yet leave its pliability intact. The surface of the fabric is then suitably ornamented by painting or printing in any suitable manner. I have shown the surface of the fabrie ornameuted by squares A B, so that it may be ornamented in tWo colors, (or more, if desired,) in the present instance, the squares marked A intending to represent red and the Witnesses:
