U'NrrEDsrArns PATENT OFFICE ELZA MPRING, or ALLEGANY, OREGON.
f Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern.'
- Be it known that I, ELZA M. PRING, citizen of the United States, residing at Allegany, in the county 4of Coos and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw- J ointers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to saw, jointersand thevprimary object of the invention is the provision of a jointer so constructed that it will joint the cutting teeth of a saw to a uniform length transversely thereof.
A further object of the invention is` to so construct the'jointer that it will give a uniform and predetermined curve to the edges of teeth of cross cut saws.
A further object of the invention is to provide a jointer so constructed that a lile may be readily applied thereto or removed therefrom, and to provide means whereby the file may be curved to any predetermined degree.
Still another object is to provide a saw jointer of such simplicity of construction that it may be cheaply manufactured and readily used.
Other objects will appear in the course of the Jfollowing description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
yFigure 1 is a front elevation of a saw with my improved saw jointer mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the saw jointer. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. l isa perspective view of a file adapted to be used with my jointer. l
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the' accompanying ,drawings by the same reference,y characters.
is of openwork or skeletonic form and is preferably cast and at its upper .end is formed with the inwardly projectingflange `3. The ends of this flange are formed with downwardly turned extremities 4 adapted to engage .over the extremities of the file used yand just inward of these extremities the flange is formed withv theushoulders' 4a againstwhich `the ends of the file restf The middle of thel flange is upwardly offset asr at 5 to form a bridge.k Through this middle upwardly ybowed portion 5 is a screw threaded 4perforation 6 for engagement with a screw shank 7. y .f a;
The inner face ofthe frame 2 is kprovided withthel laterally projecting flanges or ribs 8 andthe inwardly yprojecting flanges yor ribs r9. .The ribs or flanges Stare in alinement with each other but the inner endsof the flangesfare spaced from eachother. The l flanges 9 areofalso. in alinement with each other and 1nl vertical alinement with ``the flanges 8. These iangesS and 9. project in:
ward to a plane extending through the inid- ,dle plane of the back or flange 3.

extending ends 11 with inwardly turned eX- tremities 12 adapted to engage'bene'ath the marginal edges of theflle 13. The Lfile 13 as illustrated in Fig. l is just long enough to rest upon the shoulders or abutments kla and to be engaged `at its ends by the hookshaped `extremities 4. The middle of the file is engaged by the clip 10.
AMounted upon the screw7 is the wing nut 14y and when this wing nutis turned in one direction it will act to draw upward fon the screw?? thus causingthe clip 10 to be drawn inward or toward theportion 5 and acting to bend the middle of the file..V As the 'ends' ofthe file engage with the shoulders 4a, `it
will'be obvious thatthe file ,will be bowed and that the degree of curvature vof the `file will'depend uponthe extent to which the nut 14 is turned up.y Thus this degreeof curvature maybe very` delicately adjusted and thus the file may be adjustedto suit the j curvature of any cross cut saw. A
Inactual use the saw 15 is placed within a vise (not shown) and of any suitable character and with the teeth upward. i The jointeris thenfdisposed with the flanges 8 and 9 against the saw and with the le engaging the toothed edge of the saw. The jointer is then reciprocated to file the edge. Inasmuch as the tile is curved by the bowing of its middle portiomit is obvious that the teeth engaged by the file will be Vlilrewise curved. -As the frame 2 holdsthe file exactly at right angles to the saw, it will be obvious that the teeth will be filed uniformly transverse to the length of the saw.
The frame of the jointer is of such construction. that it may -bereadily east andthus may be cheaply made. It will also be seen that exclusive of the file thereare only three pieces to theV jointer, two of these `being an' ordinary "bolt-and nut.
' The teeth of the file 13 do not extend the full length 4of the file butthe end` portions v16 of the file. are devoid ""ofyteeth. f The smooth-surfacel at each. end r of the. fileY is` for the purpose'ofregulatingthe cuttingof the file. `By reason ofthe fact thaty the ends lare smooth surfaced and that-the curvature of the file can `be increased vor decreased by the thumb screw, the file cannbeiadjusted so as tocutvery ylightly on the pointsof the saw teethzand prevent it from .cutting away any portion ofthe :saw teetlrunnecessarily and yto no purpose. #My :jointer permits a file to be usedf'or about twicethe length .of any ordinaryf jointer; Thus I can: secure ka true circle for the entirelength of the iile, thus enabling .the raker gage .to work more accurately, and also yso jointing4 ythe `saw that it will run smoother and do more work before the teeth require rejointilng. The length ofthe file causes it to work more accurately than if the file .were short.`
