To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN B. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Riversidc, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saw joints and rake gages, and aims to provide a tool for all practical purposes providing simple and effective means for retaining the file upon the frame of the device in its two positions as well as providing an adjustable gage for the raker teeth of the saw which cannot he accidentally moved and which thereby assures a regularity of all of the raker teeth.
With the above objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is an elevation of the device showing the edge of the file sustained thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the manner of sustaining the flat face of the file to the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the manner of gaging the raker teeth. Fig. 41 is a sectional view upon the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, the file being detached from the tooth. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the tool. Fig. (3 is a perspective view of the slidable raking gage. Fig. 7 is an elevation of the tool with the raker gage detached. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the gage sliding member.
In the drawings 1 designates the joiner frame. This frame comprises a substantially rectangular member having its side walls 2 provided with lugs or projections 3, 4 and 5.
The numeral'6 designates the top of the frame. This top has one of its ends projecting beyond one of the faces of the frame so as to provide a ledge 7 The top is fur ther provided adjacent its center with downwardly extending walls 8 and 9 and horizontal walls or off-sets 10. The walls 10 are formed with downwardly projecting portions forming webs 11 and 12 which connect the base members 13. The front portion of the webs 11 and 12 are connected through the medium of a longitudinally extending member 14. This member is integrally formed with the said webs 11 and 12 and with the remaining frame, and the upper portion of the member 14 is enlarged Specification of Letters Patent.

as at 15. The upper wall of this enlargenated by numeral 16, and the center of the 'said curved or arcuate wall is in a line slightly below the lugs 3 of the side members 2. The end faces of the lugs of the side members are beveled toward the center of the device and as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings a file having its flattened face contacting the arcuate wall 10 of the member 15 is sprung between the under faces of the lugs 3 and thus securely retained upon the joiner. The under faces of the lugs 4 are also preferably inclined and are arranged a suitable distance between the lower wall 17 provided by the enlargement 15 of the member 14. The lower portion of the webs 11 and 12 as well as the base members adjacent the said webs are cut away to provide for the movement of the file retaining element 18. This member 18 is positioned directly below the connecting member 14, and is centrally provided with an opening. This opening is adapted to receive a stem projecting from the said member 141. The stem has its lower end formed with a removable cap or en gagcment and positioned between the said enlargement of the under face and the file retaining element 18 is a helical spring 19. This spring exerts pressure between the cap and the said member 18 and effectively retains the file in a flattened position between the ledges 17 and legs 1 and 5 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. It is, of course, obvious that the file retaining member 18 is of a greater width than the connection portion 14: of the frame and the said member 18 preferably has its opposite edges upturned to provide teeth 20.
The file is first arranged in an edge position to joint the teeth. After the teeth have been filed and sharpened, the file is set in the flat position illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings to remove any feather edge or bur from the saw.
The space between the webs l1 and 12 is adapted for the reception of the body portion 21 of an adjustable raker gage. The top of the said gage designated by the numeral 22, being received upon the pocket formed by walls 8, 9 and 10. The raker gage has its top provided with the usual rectangular openings 23 for the reception of the raker tooth 2 1 of the saw 25. The body 21 of the raker gage is formed upon its outer face with an inclined cut away portion 24, the latter adapted for the reception of the gage sliding block or member 25. The gage sliding block 25 has its upper and lower edges inclined to correspond with the inclined walls formed by the depression or cut away portion 2-1 of the body 21 of the gage. The opposite edges of the said block are vertically straight, and arranged transversely of the said straightened walls is a threaded opening 26, the said openings alined with similar. openings 27 and 28 formed in the connecting webs 11 and 12. All of these openings are adapted for the reception of a headed bolt 29. This bolt has its head milled and its threads only extend the distance between the connecting webs 11 and 12, the remaining portions of the said bolt being smooth so as to freely rotate within the openings of the webs adapted for the said portion. The bolt is adapted to project a suitable distance beyond the web 11, and this projecting portion is preferably formed with an opening adapted for the reception of a cotter pin or other securing devices. It is, of course, obvious that the retaining means for the bolt is not restricted as any suitable device may be employed.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, the device is shown in its adjusted position for regulating the raker tooth. and the saw in relation to the remaining teeth. The remaining teeth contact the horizontally arranged ledge 7 so that the teeth adjacent the said raker tooth will be sustained in a proper parallel relation with each other.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a saw joiner, a frame, said frame having its end walls provided upon one of their edges with a plurality of lugs, the top and bottom walls of the frame being connected together through the medium of spaced webs, the said webs being integrally formed with a connecting member, this connecting member having its upper extremity enlarged, the upper face of the said enlargement being curved, and the connecting member being provided with a spring pressed engaging element, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a saw joiner, a rectangular frame, the edges of the side members of the frame being provided upon one of their faces with projecting lugs, the central portion of the frame having a member provided with an enlarged upper portion, the top of the said enlarged portion being curved, a stem connected with the said member and projecting below the frame, a retaining member having a central opening positioned upon the stem, the said retaining member having its opposite edges formed with projections, a cap for the stem, and a helical spring upon the stem bearing between the cap and the retaining member.
8. In a saw joiner of the class set forth, a substantially rectangular frame, said frame having its central portion provided with depending webs connecting the top and the bottom of the frame, the webs having one of their faces integrally formed with a connecting portion, a raker toothed gage having its body portion positioned for vertical movement between the connecting webs, the upper members of the frame being provided with overlying ledges, the body of the gage being provided with a cut away portion having inclined walls, a gage sliding block also provided with inclined walls engaging the walls of the cut away portion of the body, and a headed threaded bolt arranged between the connecting webs and engaging the block for sliding the same and either of the webs to slide the gage.
