Description

JACOB BOHYER, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
SAW-JOINTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
Application filed November 20, 1908. Serial No. 463,684.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AGOB BOHYER, citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Jointers, of which the following is a specification.
Band saws sometimes have uneven breasts due to uneven wear, improper care or some other analogous cause. When such is the case, it is practically impossible to give the saws an even set, for if some teeth are longer than others and the same teeth have more set than others, they hook into the timber and soon cause the saw to break, besides doing extremely rough work.
The object of the present invention is to provide a novel, simple and effective structure, which overcomes the difficulty by filing down the long teeth so that the'blade is exactly the same width throughout its entire extent, producing a perfect cutting edge.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the jointer, showing a saw in place. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the embodiment illustrated, a base 6 is employed having on one side a plurality of outstanding projections 7 which are provided with one or more sets of alined channels 8 arranged to receive the back of a saw, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4. Cooperating with this base is a file-holding device consisting of a block 9 adjustable toward and from the base and having stems 10 on its inner side, and contiguous to its ends, said stems slidably passing through the base.
A saw-clamping device is employed, comprising a hook 11 having a shank 12 that passes transversely through the block 9. A thumb nut 10, threaded upon the rear end of the shank, serves to draw the hook toward the block, as will be evident by reference to Fig. 4. The file-holding device is adjusted toward and from the base, and is held in any desired adjusted position by a screw 13 threaded through the base and journaled in the block 9, being held against displacement in said block by one ormore retaining devices Ll engaging in an annular groove 15 formed in the upper portion of the screw. This screw has at its upper end a winged head 16 by means of which it can be conveniently turned. 4
In using the device, a file, as 17, is clamped by the hook 11, said hook being of a shape to hold the active face of the file at the desired inclination to the face of the base, as shown in Figs. 3 and 1. The saw, as 18 to be jointed, is engaged in one of the sets of channels 8, and said saw and jointing device are then relatively moved either by moving the device along the saw or by moving the saw along the device. In any event, it will be evident that the teeth, which are too long, will be filed down so that the saw will be the same width throughout its extent.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape,
proportion, and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a saw jointer, the combination with a base having a plurality of outstanding projections, said projections being provided with alined longitudinally disposed sawreceiving channels, of a block adjustable toward and from the base and having guide stems slidably passing therethrough, an adjusting and holding screw journaled in the block and threaded through the base, and a file-embracing hook having a shank passing transversely through the block in angular relation to the holding and adjusting screw.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JACOB BOHYER.
