J, BEAULIEU.
SAW LEVEL AND SET GAGE.
No. 365,163. Patented June 21, 1887.
NITED STATES ATENT ()FFICEU JOHN BEAULIEU, OF ARCATA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN HARPST, OF SAME PLACE.
SAW-LEVEL AND SET-GAGE,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,163, dated June 21, 1887.
Application filed March 1957.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, Jenn BEAUL'IEU, of Arcata, Humboldt county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Saw-Levels and SetGagrs; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a tool which is especially adapted for the leveling of the teeth of crosseut-saws and to serve as a gage by which the set of the teeth is accurately made.
It consists of a bar having a plane surface to rest upon the points of the teeth, by the aid of which they are leveled, and from one side of this bar a plate extendsat right angles with the level-face, and is provided with points to rest upon the side of the saw-blade, while the adjustable screw passes through the upper part and serves to reg ulatc the set of the teeth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a. more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of my device applied to a saw as a level. Fig. 2 shows its application as a gage for setting.
A is a bar or plate, which may be preferably made thin and ofsuffieient length to rest upon several teeth of a saw, and having, also, suf ficient width for this purpose. It made thin, a straight rib should be formed upon the back, as shown. Thelower face ofthis plate is trued oil, so as to be perfectly straight and serve as a straightcdge or level for the tops of the sawteeth. From one side of this level a plate, B, extends at right angles with the leveling-face. This plate may be of any suitable or ornamental shape, either of a diamond form, or, as at present shown, circular or oval, and having lugs C O, with small projecting points l),which serve to rest against the face of the plate when the device is to be used as a sct-gage.
E is a screw passing through the upper part Sci-i al No. 229,862.
(No model.)
of the device, and its point may be set so that when the points D rest upon the side of the saw-blade the point of the screw will stand so as to just touch the points of the teeth when they are properly set. The plate 13 extends down at the side and serves as a guide when the level. is applied to the tops of the sawtooth, and by this means the tops' of the teeth are all brought to acommon level while filing, after which the setting may be accurately aceomplishcd.
F is a screw fixed in the face of the plate A, which rests upon the points of the saw-teeth, and this screw serves, also, as a rake-gage for the teeth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The level having the guide or gage plate extending at right angles from one side of its face, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
2. The combined level and sawgage consisting of a straight-edge or bar having the setting gage or plate projecting at right angles from one side of it and provided with the points to rest against the saw-plate, and the adjustable screw E, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
3. The level and gage consisting of the straightedge, with the gageplate projecting at right angles, as shown, in combination with the screw F, fiXOd in the face of the plate, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN BE AULIEU.
