Lette/rs Patent No. 101,258, dated March 29, 1870.
IIMPROVEDEN'J,I IN SAWS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. Goonxow, of Detroit, in the county of'VVayne and State of Michigan, have invented a'new and useful Improvement in Oirc'ular-Saw Teeth; and I do declare that the f'ollowing is a true' and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the lette/rs of reference marked thereon and being a part of' this specification, in whichigure 1 is atl-perspective of' the upper and cutting partcf'tlie tooth.
. Figure 2 is a plan view of the top of the tooth, showing my upset flange. l 4
Figure `3 represents two teeth inserted in a circular-saw plate, showing the method of' securing them inplace.'
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improved construction of circular-saw teeth; and
It consists in providing the tooth, when inserted.
into a saw-plate, wit-h an oblong semi-slot, by means .of which and a proper rivet the teeth are secured iinnly in the saw-plate.
` In the accompanying drawings-.-
'A represents the top ofthe tooth, which is swaged or upset, thereby forming a flange, a, upon both sides, extending from the cutting-point b backward, as far as may be necessary, taking care that the flanges are broader at the'cutting-edge or point b, and tapering as they recede from said cutting-point, as shown in the drawings. This is better than to have the side faces of the flanges parallel with the sides of the tooth.
This improvement is equally applicable to all circular-saws, whether solid or inserted teeth are use d.
When inserted teeth are used with this improvement, they should be provided with an oblong semislot, c, which should'be coincident with a similar semislot, d, in the saw-plate, and a rivet' of oblong form should be employed to secure the teeth in place. This rivet, by presenting a longer surface on a line from the point of the teeth to the center part of` the sawplate, renders it much easier to set the teeth in line with the saw thanlwhen around rivet is used, as is usually done.
IVhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the tooth A, the oblong slot c 41, with its longer diameter vertically arranged, onehalf of said slot being in the end of the tooth A and the other half in the saw-plate, and provided with a suitable rivet, when constructed as described and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
' GEORGE B. GOODNOW.
