LOCK FOR SLIDING WINDOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent. l vPaix-intent NOV. 10, 1914.
Application led November' 30, 1912, Serial No. 734,279. Renewed March 30, 1914. Serial No. 828,160.
To all 'whom it may concern: Y
Be it lrnown that we, CHARLES W. NTILL and WILLIAM L. SCHMOLLE, subjects of the King ot Great Britain, residing at San. Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California7 have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks tor Sliding l/Vindows, of which the following is a specification. I A 4 The object of the present invention is to provide a window lock adapted for use in windows having horizontally sliding sashes, by'which lock such sashes can be secured in any one of several positions and which will be neat and inconspi'cuous in appearance and convenient -in use.
v cured to, or formed integral with, a metal ln the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a iti-ont elevation of the lower portion oi a window equipped with ourV invention, the lower portion 'of one sash being broken away to sho-w the locking device; Fig. 2 is a'horizontal section ot the window in its open position; lig is' an enlarged vertical section through a ivot oi: the window sash; Fig. t is an en arged broken plan view ot a slideway and one ol the shoes therein; Fie. 5 isl a transverse secf tion on the line 5-5 but with the locking dog in the Vinoperative position; Fig. 6 is a similar section showing the dog in its operative position. v
Referring to the drawing, l indicates a window traine, having a sill 2 and vertical side ,pieces 3. Resting upon said sill and having its 4ends secured between said side pieces is a slideway Llathe sides of which are :Formed with upwardly flaring innerl surfaces. ln said slideway can slide shoes 6,
having downwardly converging sides. Each shoe is'tormed near its outer endwith an aperture in which is pivoted or stepped a pivot pin 7, depending from, and rigidly seplate 8, secured upon the horizontal side oit' a longitudinal angular recess 5 formed in the bottbni of each sash 9 at its inner side, said sashes being hinged together, as shown at l1, at their inner or adiacent vertical 4 edges. By sliding said shoes away trom one another in the slideway, the sashes can be moved into the one plane and the window closed while by sliding the shoes in the opposite direction, or toward one an-V other, the sashes canbe placed at an angle with one another and the window opened. A suitable locking device 13 is provided to lock the sashes in their closed position.
'lhe general construction, however, of sashes so movable forms no part oi our present invention. The outer wall of said slideway is formed, preferably at regular intervals with slots or recesses 12, open at the top. ilntothese recesses are adapted to swing locking dogs 15, contained in recesses 1liin said shoes and pivoted on horizontal longitudinal pivot pins 17 secured in the shoes, across said recesses 1i, each recess being formed at the top with an extension 16 suiiiciently large for the insertion of a finger to engage the rear portion of the. loci@ ing' dog to swing it troni their inoperative to. their operative position to cause it to engage a slot 12. The upper edge of said dog will, in its inoperative position, rest in the recess 14C substantially flush with the upper edge of the slideway, so as to be out of the way of the window sash when inoving to its closed position. Since the bottoni of each sashl at its outer side is not cut away, it entirely closes and conceals, when in its closed position, the slots or recesses 1Q in the outer wall of the slideway, so that the window is of usual appearance. lll/'e claim zy In combination with a window frame having a' window sill, window sashes hinged together at inner vertical edges, the lower edges of said window sashes being formed on their inner sides with longitudinal angular.recesses, a slideway secured upon said sill, and received in said recesses of the sashes and adapted to be concealed by the outer portions of the sashes when in their closed position, the outer wall of said slide way having slots or recesses open at the top, shoes slidable in the slideway to which In testimny whereof We have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
