OLGA BERGHORN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
CIGARETTE-BOX.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLGA BnRonoRN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City Heights, Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved cardboard cigarette box or carton provided, in a separate compartment, With a supply of matches for lighting the contained cigarettes.
The object is to provide a construction which is simple, neat, strong and effective and which will not add materially to the cost of the box; and, while constituting an attractive novelty, will have the general appearance of the ordinary hinged-cover form of cigarette box with which the public is familiar.
Briefly and generally described, the device comprises an ordinary or suitable form of cigarette box having a hinged closure for retaining the cigarettes, a strip of matches and i niting material applied to the top of this closure, a false lid of stiff cardboard, of the same size as the top of the closure, to overlie the matches, and a strip applied to the top of the box closure and the inside of the false lid so as to constitute an internal hinge member, and in addition covering the outside of the false lid and extended around the box so as to constitute external hinge members. In this way a strong construction and neat appearance are secured in a very economical manner.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention: Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device, showing the false lid raised; Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof, looking at the back of the box and the top of the false lid, which is partly closed; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through a modified construction, showing both the closure and the false lid open; Fig. 4: is a plan view of Fig. 3 with the closure down and the false lid entirely opened; and Fi 5 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention With the false lid closed and showing how this lid may be provided with a permanent curvature so as to lie closely against the top of the box.
a closure 11 hinged to the back of the bod at 14. A false lid 12 is hinged to the bac Specification of Letters Patent.

of the closure and is of the same size and shape as the top thereof, being formedof a rectangular piece of cardboard, preferably of about the same weight as the stock of which the body and closure are made.
The hinge connecting the false lid 12 with the closure includes an inner flexible sheethinge member 13, which is preferably in the form of a paper folder consisting of two leaves 15 and 16, the leaf 15 covering the inner surface of the lid 12 and being pasted or otherwise united thereto, while the leaf 16 is similarly applied to the top of the closure 11. A strip or series of matches 17, with a strip of paper 18 hearing igniting composition 19, are secured to the upper surface of the leaf 16, and are thus carried by the closure 11.
The strips forming the folder 13 passes over the edge of the false lid 12 and covers and is pasted to the upper surface of the lid 12, forming a label strip 20, and extends down and is pasted to the back of the box proper and preferably also around beneath, so as to cover the bottom of the same. this construction this label strip also forms the hinge 14 between the closure 11 and the body 10.
The label strip, as its name indicates, is a strip of paper which is printed or lithographed with the label, trade-mark, or other display matter of the particular cigarette manufacturer or dealer. By extending continuously over the outer surfaces of the false lid and box proper, it affords a neat and economical construction; and, together with the folder 13, constitutes a strong, though entirely flexible, hinge for the false lid. The leaf 15 also constitutes a display surface adapted to bear advertising or other matter.
As shown in Fig. 5, the comparatively stifi' material of the false lid enables it to be given a permanent upward curvature from front to back, to assist the false lid in lying substantially flat on top of the cover without the employment of any special fastening means. The dotted lines 21 in this view indicate that both the false lid and the closure may be held closed by the Internal Revenue stamp or other seal prior to the breaking of the package.
What I claim as new is:
A cardboard cigarette box having a body and a hinged closure bearing matches and igniting material on top, in combination with a false cardboard lid hinged to the rear edge of said closure to cover the top of the same with its matches and igniting material, and a continuous display and label strip applied to the top of the main closure, the inner and outer surfaces of the false lid and extending around the outside of the boX proper and thus afiordi'ng inner and outer hinge members connecting said false lid to said closure and also forming a hinge be- 10 tween the main closure and the box body.
In witness whereof I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
