LEONAS. BRADY, OF NORWOOD, OHIO.
sEALINe-Pnnssi cipal object contemplates the provision of a device of this character which may be manually operated to press a can cover on the can during the process of applying sealing waX or any other suitable material commonly employed in making an air tight joint between the cans and their covers. The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more partlcularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the-preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding partsz Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2.-2 of Fig. '1. Fig. '3 is a detail view of the pivoted latch employed in holding the pressing elements of the invention in adjusted position. v
Proceeding now to the description. of the drawings, the numeral 1, designates a base block formed of wood, or other suitable materials, and carrying a pair of vertical side boards or standards 2 and 3. In practice, the lid 4: of the can. '5 is applied in the usual manner and is held in secure sealing engagement with the top of the can by the pressure exerted upon a pressing rod 6 by an operating lever 7 The operating lever 7 is pivoted to the member 8 adjacent the upper terminal thereof as at 8, and is pivotally connected midway its length by a bolt 9 that is inserted through a right angular extension carried. on the upper end of the pressing rod 6, so that the rod 6 isoffset to provide for its engagement with a can when placed upon the base board 1. A head 10 is provided for the lower terminal Specification of Letters Patent.

which it is found desirable to employ.
When the handle terminal 11 of the operat ing lever 7 has been depressed to apply the desired amount of pressure to the can cover 4:, a pivoted latch, illustrated in detail in Fig. 3 and designated as an entirety by the numeral 12,.is applied by engaging one of its locking tongues 13 with the upper edge .of the lever 7, as will be observed by refer- This latch member 12 is ence to Fig. 1. pivoted to the standard 2 by a pin 14 in the usual manner.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing, but it is desirable to emphasize the fact that the operation of this device is simple in the extreme. It is also desirable to emphasize the fact that since the number of parts is relatively small, the device may be cheaply manufactured.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various proportion and arrangement of parts may bosite relation to each other, an'operating lever pivoted at one end upon one of said standards to one side edge thereof and adj acent to the upper terminal and having its other end extended beyond the other standard and cut away upon opposite sides to form a handle portion, a latch having a plurality of angularly disposed teeth pivoted upon the outer face of the standard adjacent to the free end of the lever and arranged to engagethe lever in spaced relation tothe end thereof to hold said lever in adjusted position, a pressure rod, an annular head member carried upon the lower terminal of said pressure rod, a right angular extension formed on the upper end of the pressure rod, a bolt inserted. through the minor changes 1n details of construction,
