FRANK H. GREENAWALT, or rrrrsnunen, PENNsYL AN'rAQ 5 HOT-AIR-REGISTER' ATTACHMENT.)
Specification of Letters Patent. :1 1914.
Application filed October 13, 1913." Serial No. 794,793.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. Gminnarf WALT, a citizen of the United States, resi'dingat Pittsburgh, county of Allegheny, and
State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot- Air-Register Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for hot air registers and particularly to a dust arrester for hot air registers.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the class mentioned which may be readily and quickly attached to a register and which will, when in position, efli: ciently serve to prevent dust, soot or smoke entering the room through the register.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the class mentioned which shall be of simple construction and of low cost to manufacture.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device as mentioned which shall occupy but little space when not in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists generally in a frame provided at its extremities with means for attaching a cloth or the like thereto and means for attaching said frame to the register.
More particularly my invention consists of a dust arrester comprising a pair of bars pivotally connected at substantially the center, means at the ends of said bars for attaching a cloth thereto and a clasp or spring tongue at the point of intersection of said bars for attaching the device to the register, the pivotal connection of the bars serving to facilitate foldingthe device when not in use.
My invention further consists invarious details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be more .fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in Which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a dust arrester embodying my invention in its preferred form, without the cloth attached thereto, Fig. 2 is a section on substantially the line aa-m of Fig. 1 illustrating the device appliedto the register, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device in folded position.
,The' device comprises a pair of similar bars 1 and 2 intersecting at substantially midway their length and. connected at the point of intersection by a bolt or rivet 3.
Secured to the bars by the rivet ,3 is a spring tongue 4 adapted to engagethe register for holding the device in position on the same.
The ends of the bars 1 and 2 are provided with means for securing a piece of cheese cloth or similar fabric thereto, and to this. end, the ends of the bars are formed with, spurs 5 which are sharpened to facilitate placing the fabric thereon. In order to hold the edges of the fabric in close engagement with the edge of the register or adjacent portion of the wall and also to hold the device firmly in position, the ends of the bars 1 and 2 are inwardly offsetas at 6, which throws the extreme ends of thebars bearing the points 5 into engagement with the edge of the register or the wall as shown, clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawing. I
In order that the device may occupy but little room when not in service I prefer to pivotally connect the bars 1 and'2 by the bolt or rivet 3 so that the same may be folded into the positionshown in Fig. 3 to facilitate folding the same. The distance between the off-set portion 6 upon one of the bars is slightly less than the distance between the similar off-set portions on the other bar so that one bar may fit within the other, when folded, as shown.
In using the device the frame is extended into the position shown in Fig. 1 and the sheet of fabric 7 secured in position by means of the spurs or pointed ends 5and the device is thenplaced in position on the register by inserting the tongue 4: through one of the openings in the register. jThe off-set portions 6 are of sufficient length :to
2. In a device of the class described a pair of intersecting bars connected at their point of intersection,- aregister. engaging tongue secured to said bars, the ends of said bars 5 being oflF-set on the side With said tongue and said ends being providedwith spurs, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described a pair of bars pivotally connected at substantially 10 their center, a register engaging tongue secured to said'bars, the ends of said bars beingnoff-set and spurs 0n the ends of said bars, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing Witnesses.
FRANK H. GREENAWALT.
