Description

@tutti @da nL-IJAH ALTMAN, or HAMILTON, MISSOURI.
l 'Letters Patent No. 111,300, dated January 31, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN WELL'AUGERS.
The Schedule referred. to intheuel Letters If'atent and making part'ofthe same..
To all whom it ana/y concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIJAH ALTMAN, of Handb' ton, in the county of Caldwell andl State of Missouri,
have invented anew and useful Improvement in Welli Auger; and I do hereby declare 'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art tomake and use the same, Vreference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification'. Figure 1 is a side view of my improved well-auger, partsheing broken away to show the construction.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same, partly in section through the line a: x, iig. 1.
Y Similarrletters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object tofuruish an irnproved well-auger, designedv more particularly for bor-` ingthrough veins of 'quicksand,' and'whieh shall be simple in construction and e'ective in operation, taking outthe water and dirt much cleaner than angers constructed in the ordinaryI manner; and
It consists in the constructiouaud combinationof the various parts of the auger, as hereinafter more full y described.
The conical point A of the lauger is rigidlyconfv nested4 with the lowe'r end of the shaft B, and ispreferably formed in one piece with the tube O. A
" D D indicate a double spiral-flange, securely attaehed to or formed on `and extending around the Vpoint A and tube C, on -opposite sides of the same,
as shown. The office of these anges is the same as that ofthe lips and twist or spiral anges of the ordi-- nary double-twistV wood-augers.
E is a disk, through the center of which, the shaft B passes, and which fits loosely into the interior of the tube'G.
The disk E is connected with 4the disk F by rods, G, which rods should be longer .than the tube O, so that when the disk E is in the bottom of the tub'e C the disk F may be above the uppel-end of the said tube, so as to leave -its upper end'wholly -unobstructed. I Y
To'the'disk-llare attached hooks, H, for convenn ienee in drawing the disk E out of the tube O to clear it of dirt. l
Tot-he upper part of the shait B is rigidly :attached a disk, I, having staples or keepers, J, attached to its upper-side to receive levers for operatingthe auger.
` The upperend of the shaft B, that projects above the disk I, should be square o'for convenienceA in H, or equivalent, and disk I provided with keepers J with -each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. L
