Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented @ct. 8, 1914.
'1 0 n7] whom it may concern Be it known that I, CASPAR Mnr'rnnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Holders for Drinking-Cups, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a holder for use in connection with drinking cups having unsealed sides, said holder serving as a means for temporarily sealing the sides of the cups and supporting the walls of the cups when filled.
A further object is to provide a holder of the above character which will be easily manipulated and into which the cups may be readily inserted andas readil removed.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents the holder in top plan with my improved drinking cup inserted into position therein ready to have its side edges pinched together to seal the side of the cup, Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the same, the cup being shown in dotted lines in its collapsed position and in full lines in its distended position, certain of the parts being broken away to more clearly show the parts beneath the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line AA of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4c is a front view of the holder with the cup removed therefrom.
The cup is denoted by 1, and is made of waxed paper or other suitable waterproof material. The cup is conical in form and is normally collapsed and has an unsealed side. The holder which is arranged to pinch the side edges of the cup together to seal the side of the cup, is constructed as follows:
Two jaws 2 and 3 are hinged together at 4, and are provided at their free ends with longitudinally extended coacting surfaces 5, 6, from which project laterally curved sustaining arms 7, 8. The jaw 2 is provided with a cup positioning device which is herein shown as a laterally extended pin 9, near the bottoms of the jaws 2, 3. The coacting surfaces 5 and 6 of the jaws 2 and 3, are provided the one with a tongue 10 and the other with a groove 11, for receiving between them the free side edges of the cup 1.
The edges of the holder are held normally open by any suitable means, such, for exthe side edges of the cup together'and sealing the side of the cup. As water or other liquid is poured into the cup, the cup will be expanded into the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the arms 7 and 8 serving to sustain the walls of the cup and prevent the cup from collapsing. As soon as the cup has been used, it may be readily discarded by simply permitting the jaws to open and thereby releasing the cup from its clamped engagement with the holder.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein shown and described, but
\Vhat I claim is:
1. A holder for drinking cups having free side edges comprising means for pinching the side edges of the cup together to seal the same.
2. A holder for drinking cups having free side edges, comprising means for pinching the side edges of the cup together to seal the same and positioning means for the cup.
3. A holder for drinking cups having freeside edges comprising means for pinching the side edges of the cup together to seal the same and means for sustaining the walls of the cup when the cup is filled.
4. A holder for drinking cups having free side edges comprising means for pinching the side edges of the cup together to seal the same, means for sustaining the walls of the cup when the cup is filled and positioning means for the cup.
5. A holder for drinking cups having free side edges comprising jaws for pinching the side edges of the cup together to seal the same. Y
6. A holder for drinking cups having free side edges comprising jaws for pinching the side edges oi the cup iogether to seal the some and means for positioning the cup in the holder.
'4". A holder for drinking oops having iree side edges comprising jaws for pinching the side edges of the cup together to seed the some and, means for sustaining the Wells of the sup "when the cup is filled,
8. A hoider for drinking cups having free side edoes comprising jaws for pinching the of the cup together to seed the some, means for positioning the cup in the holder and means for sustaining the wells of the cup when ihe cup is fi iedu 9. A hoider for drinking oops hevi" side edges comprising two jib NS for p the side ed es of the cup together the some, s i jaws being provided mining urine Which ooeoi; 15o sugoporit 461 e sid Weiis of the cup When the cup is filled,
10. A holder for drinking cups hen free side edges comprising two jr pinching the side edges of "she onp 530" i T o on n the to seed. izhe seine means te n. aws end means limiting; ment or the j iii A holder oonieei-sheeed orlninng inreeee cups having free side edges comprising; jaws :Eor pinching the side edges of the cup 150" geaher to seed the same and a pin carried by 3o one of the jaws for ositioning the on with in. hoi er.
12, A holder -for drinking cups having unseeied sides said holder having jaws an '1 when closed. to seal the sides of the .i. A hoider for drinhlng cups her ing unseeded. sides, said holder having two jaws of when oiosed to seal the sides of the cups, and cup positioning means" iesiiinony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, TL have signed my name in f W0 Witnesses, this eighth day deorner i912 GASPAB;
