T o all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES SCIIICK, citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Presses, of which the following is a specifica-tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to paper balers and has for its object the production of a simple and eiicient baler formed of sheet metal,
to coniine the same to a minimum amount of space.
A still further object of the invention is the production of an efiicient means for holding the plunger in the desired position whether in an elevated or compressed relation by means of the same mechanism.
A still further object of the invention is the production of an efficient plunger operating mechanism, whereby the plunger may be readily elevated or lowered to the desired position and then adjusted by means of a ratchet lever as hereinafter described.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear throughout the following specitication and claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the press looking from the front thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the press showing the front door in an open position and the plunger in an operative position. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the press. Fig. f1 is a section taken on line -Jf, of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the upper end of the press. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the press. Fig. 7 is an enlarged vertical section through the upper end of the press. Fig. S is a detail perspective of the operating pawl for the press. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of one of the side braces for holding the upper portion of the .door in an adjusted position. Fig. 10 is a side elevation of one of the brace rods which engage the upper portion of the door showing the position of the pin which travels in the slot formed therein when the door is 4in a closed position.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the present invention is formed of sheet metal and comprises a body portion 1 having laterally extending fianges 2 upon the base thereoffor providing an eiicient means for supporting the press upon a support. The body 1 carries a hinged door 3, which hinged door carries a hinged upper portion- 4., which upper portion is braced by means of side braces 5 for holding the upper portion 4 of the door in an adjusted position, whereby the upper portion may be used as a chute for directing the material into the interior of the press. The upper portion #l of the door is provided with a flange 6 upon the sides thereof for directing the upper portion of the door to its correct position upon the press. The braces 5 are provided with longitudinally extending slots 8 which engage the side of the pins 7 for holding the door -1 in its correct position as shown in Fig.` 1. These slots 8 travel over pins 7 formed'in the sides of the body of the braces 5 as illustrated clearly in Fig. 1. The main door 3 maybe swung to the open position as illustrated. in Fig. 2, and an elongated locking lever 9 is pivotally secured to the brackets 10, and this lever 9 is adapted to overhang the front of the door and be engaged by a pivotally mounted latch 11, which latch tits over the keeper 412 by the lever 9. The door 3 will in this manner be firmly held in a set position since the laterally extending ends 13 of the lever 9 will t snugly against the front of the door 3 and constitute a brace as well as an efficient lock therefor.
The body 1 of the press is provided upon the top thereof with a pair of spaced angle irons 14, and between these irons passes the operating shaft 15, `which shaft is journaled upon the journal brackets 1G carried by the side of the press. A ratchet wheel 18 is also carried by the shaft 15 and is operated by means of a ratchet lever 19, whereby the plunger 20 hereinafter described may be compressed upon the bale Q1 illustrated in Fig. 2. This ratchet lever carries a pawl 22 which engages the ratchet wheel 18 as is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 6 for facilitating the operation of the plunger 20.
A housing 23 is carried between the angle irons 14 centrally thereof, and this housing 23 constitutes a guide for the vertically eX- tending portion 24 of the plunger .20. This vertically extending portion 24 is provided upon one face thereof with a plurality of rack teeth 25 which teeth are engaged by means of a gear wheel or pinion 26 carried by the shaft l5. The plunger 24 also carries a transversely extending bar 27 which is adapted to limit the down movement of the plunger by resting upon the upper end of the housing 23.
A locking awl 28 is carried by a shaft 29 which sha t is journaled within the casing 23 and carries a crank handle 30 for facilitating the swinging of the pawl 28 to the desired position. This pawl 28 comprises an elongated body having a concave surface 3lwhich terminates upon each side thereof in a sharp rack engaging toothed face 32, whereby the pawl 28 may be swung to hold the plunger 24 in an upwardly extending position or hold the same in a set -compressed position such as illustrated in F ig. 2.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that this pawl 28 will accomplish a two fold function, to wit: holding the plunger in two adjusted positions and therevby eliminating the necessity of employing two pawls as has heretofore been necessary in presses having a structure somewhat similar to the present device.
The lower end of the vertically extending portion of the plunger 24 carries a head 20 as is illustrated and this head 20 comprises a pair of side flanges 33 which reinforce the head and a plurality of centrally located angle members 34 are carried thereby which fit upon and engage the vertically extending portion 24 of the plunger for firmly connecting the vertically extending portion 24 with the head 20. The plunger is also provided upon the Under face thereof with a plurality ottransversely extending angle irons 34 which extend in such a manner as to reinforce the head transversely and also constitute guides for the binding wires 35 of the 'bale 2l.

l. A. sheet metal baling press comprising a pair of side plates, a back plate, a cover secured to said side plates and provided with transversely extending angle members, an
upwardly extending casing carried by said angle members, a plunger working in said casing and provided with a straight face adapted to lie snugly against the inner face of said casing, a pinion, rack teeth formed upon said plunger and meshing with said pinion whereby said plunger may be raised and lowered by the rotation of said pinion, and adjustable means for locking said plunger against longitudinal movement within said casing.
2. A. sheet metal baling'press comprising side plates, a back plate, transversely extending angle bars bracing said side' plates and constituting a top reinforcement for said press, a casing carried by the upper edges of said angle bars, ak plunger rod working in said casing and normally resting against the inner face of said casing, a plunger head carried by the lower end of said plunger rod and comprising a plurality of transversely extending angle bars for reinforcing said plunger head, and a swinging door carried by one of said side plates.
