SAMUEL J'. ARNOLD, F DUBUQUE, IOWA.
HAND-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 18, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. ARNOLD, citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a press for baling waste paper which shall be simple in construction and shall have great power and easily operated by hand.
In what it consists, its manner of construction and mode of use will be fully set out and described in the following specification together with the drawings accompanying the same and forming a part hereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front side. Fig. 2 is a perspective view front quarter of the press. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the wheel and lever inoperative position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the back side of the press. Fig. 5 is a cross section through line 00-05 with the arms removed. Fig. 6 is an inside view of the ratchet wheel. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the follow-board.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in each of the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 2 represents the rear side of the press which consists of two planks 4, one at each side bolted to a cross plate 5 at the base and cross-plate 6 at the top. Between these two planks 4 are two guide plates 8 that are similarly secured to the cross-plates 5 and 6 and extend conslderably above the planks 4. These guides 8 are faced on their inner sides with metal plates 10 and are set a short distance from the plank 4 leaving vertical spaces 12. They also are set apart from each other for the purposes presently to appear. Between the plates 5 and 6 and outside of the back of press are secured a short distance apart, two posts or supports which are held 1n place by two metal rods 16. Between the supports 15 is fastened a stop 18. The sides of the press are formed of planks 11 secured a short distance apart, to the plates 5 and 6. Upon the plate 6 are attached brackets and 22 in which is mounted a shaft 25 and upon the outer end of the shaft is mounted a ratchet wheel 26 provided with the teeth 28. Against the inner side of the wheel 26 is secured, preferably cast integral therewith, a second wheel 30 provided with the teeth 32 and upon the plate 6 is attached a bracket 34 to which is pivoted a dog 35 adapted to engage the teeth 32 of the wheel 30. The end of the shaft 25 projects through the wheel 26 and to this projection is removably secured a crank 27 provided with a handle 29. There is also provided a lever 31 curved at one end to conform with the periphery of the ratchet wheel 26 and having a hook 33 at the end of the curve adapted to engage the teeth 28 of the wheel 26.
In the rear of the press between the guides 8 is a gear bar 36 provided with a groove on each side, which grooves are adapted to be engaged by the metal plates 10 upon the guides 8. Mounted upon the shaft 25 is a gear wheel 40 adapted to engage the gear bar 36 and cause it to travel up and down. To the gear bar 36 are secured arms 42 which project downward and forward and to the lower end of which is rigidly fastened a presser frame 44, the edges of which are preferably formed of angle iron plates, united firmly together and bolted to the gear bar 36. This frame is adapted to en gage the edges of a follow-board 47 shown in Fig. 7.
To the front of the press is hinged a door 45 by the hinges 46 and having straps 48, each provided with a notch 50 adapted to be engaged by a hook 52 pivoted to one side of the press, whereby the door may be securely locked.
The manner of operating my press is substantially as follows. Starting with the door 45 locked by the hooks, and the presser frame 44 at its full height and the lever 31 removed, the operator fillsthe press with the paper through the opening in the frame 44 and places thereon the follow-board 47, then grasps the handle 29 of the crank 27 and rotates the shaft 25 and with it the gear wheel 40 and, since the gear wheel meshes into the gear bar 36, the bar 36 will be brought down and with it the frame on the follow-board and press the paper to a limited extent, then the crank 27 is reversed and the press is refilled through the presser frame as before and this is pressed in the same manner as before, then when there is suflicient for a bale partly pressed the operator takes the lever 31 and brings the hook into engagement with the teeth 28 on the wheel 26 and completes the pressing of the paper. The door 45 is opened and the binding wire is inserted through the grooves (not shown) in the floor and up through the vertical spaces in the back and beneath the follow-board and the ends of the wire twisted together, and the bale is rolled out through the door.
It will be seen that by means of the crank 27 being attached directly to the shaft 25, that the preliminary pressure can be done with great speed and also the refilling after the preliminary pressing of the first filling has been made, and then the length of the lever 31 and the manner of applying will enable the operator to subject the paper to an enormous pressure. It will also be noticed that the various fillings are through the open presser frame and not beneath a raised follow-board and can be rapidly accomplished without removing the frame.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is s 1. In a device of the character described, a press provided with a door extending the length of the press, means for locking the door, supports on the rear of the press, a shaft mounted on said supports, a gear wheel on the shaft, a gear bar engaging the gear wheel, an open frame secured to the gear bar, a follow board adapted to be engaged by the frame on the gear bar, a ratchet wheel mounted on the shaft and provided with a spur-gear and pawl, a crank attached to the shaft for rotating the shaft and partially pressing the paper, and a lever adapted to removably engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel and complete the pressing of the paper in the press.
2. In a device of the character described, a press having a plurality of vertical spaces in the rear, a plate secured to the upper part of the rear of the press, supports set a short distance apart, under and forming a support for said plate, brackets secured on said plate, a shaft mounted in the brackets, a gear roller mounted on the shaft, a gear bar adapted to mesh with the gear roller and be moved vertically thereby, an open frame secured to the gear bar, a followboard adapted to be engaged by said frame, a ratchet wheel secured upon said shaft, a crank on said shaft to partially press the paper, and a lever adapted to engage the teeth on the ratchet wheel and complete the pressing of the paper.
8. In a device of the character described, a press, a door hinged to the press, a lock adapted to fasten the door to the press, a plate secured upon the back of the press, supports beneath said plate, a shaft mounted on said plate, a gear roller on the shaft, a gear bar adapted to mesh with the gear roller and be moved vertically thereby, said gear bar having grooves in its oppo site edges, guide plates adapted to engage the grooves in the gear bar and direct the movements of said bar, a presser frame s'ecured to the gear bar and providing an opening through which the paper is intro duced into the press, a follow-board in the press adapted to be engaged at its edges by the presser frame, a ratchet wheel having teeth on its periphery'and provided with a spur-wheel, a pawl secured to the side of the press and engaging the spurwheel, a crank on the end of said shaft for partially pressing the paper, and a lever adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel and complete the pressing of the paper.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL J. ARNOLD.
