To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns SMITH, of Marquette, in the county of Marquetteand State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ealing-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l, Sheet 1, is a front elevation of one of my improved baling-presses. 1, is an end elevationV of the same. Fig. 3, Sheet 2, is a rear elevation of the lower part of the same, shown enlarged and partly in section. Fig. 4, Sheet 2, is a sectional plan view of the same taken through the line zr av, Fig. 3.
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of baling-presses and promote convenience in operating such presses, and effectiveness in their use.
The invention consists in the combination, with the press-sills and follower, of tubular shafts provided with ratchet wheels, gearwheels having spring-pawls engaging with the said ratchet-wheels, gear-segments and levers for operating the said gear-wheels, ratchetwheels, and tubular shafts, and ropes connecting the tubular shafts and the follower, whereby the said follower can be readily drawn downward to press the material into a bale. Y To the upper ends of the upwardly-extended middle parts of the slotted ends of the balingboX is journaled a shaft connected with the follower by ropes, and carrying aspoke-wheel provided with an operating-rope,whereby the said follower can be quickly raised.
YWith the door of the press and the upper cross-bar of the end of the baling-box and the double-j ointed hinge attached to the said door and cross-bar are conn ected an interposed plate and a bolt attached to the said door and passing through the said plate, whereby the sag of the door can be readily taken up.

The ends of the cross-bars of the baling-box back and the cross-bars of the hinged door are connected by bolts having straight hooks at one end 'and nuts at the other end, and are provided with handles for convenience in turning them, the said nuts being held from turning by keepers placed over them,whereby the said door can be readily fastened and unfastened, and will be securely held, as will `be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
A are the sills of the press, which are connected by bolts B, and are kept at the proper distance apart by cross-bars O, interposed between them and kept in place by dowel-pins or other suitable means. Y
D is the bottom of the baling-boX, which rests upon the sills A, and is attached to bars E, placed at the inner sides of the said sills A. To the bottom D is attached the head-block F, which has grooves in its upper side to receive Vthe bale-bands.
G is the back4 of the baling-box, which rests at its lower edge upon the bottom D at the rear edge of the head-block F, and'has crossbars H,attached to its lower and middle parts. The back G vhas vertical slots I formed init to receive the bale-bands, and enlargements J of the said slots Lat the upper edge of the upper cross-bar H, to serve as handaholes for the operator lto pass his hand through to grasp the bale-bands and draw them through the spaces between the crossbars K,y attached to the lower sides of the bars L,forming the follower. The rear ends of the bale-bands are hooked upon dowelpins M, crossing the slots I a little above the hand-slots J, so that the said rear ends can be readily grasped and drawn to the forward side 0f the press.
N are the ends of the baling-box, the lower ends of whichrest upon the bottom D at the end edges of the head-block F.' T-o the lower and middle part of the ends N are attached cross-bars O, at the same level as the cross-bars H. The ends N, from the upper cross-barO upward, have slots l? formed in them to receive the projecting ends of the longitudinal IOO bars L of the follower. The middle parts of the ends N are extended upward to serve as supports for the shaft, hereinafter described.
The front of the baling-box is formed of two doors. To the lower and middle parts of the lower door, Q, are attached cross-bars R, at the same level as the cross-bars O, and in the said door Q, and directly opposite the slots I, are formed slots S, to receive the bale-bands.
In the projecting ends of the cross-bars H R, at one end of the press, are formed holes to receive the bolts T, which have straight hooks U at their forward ends tov pass through the holes in the bars R, which holes are elongated at their inner sides for the passage of the said hooks U, so that the door Q can be fastened shut by turning the said bolts T through onequarter of a revolution. Upon the rear ends of the bolts T are screwed nuts V, which are held from turning by keepers W, attached to the cross-bar H. The screw-threads of the bolts T are so formed that the movements of the said bolts when turned to fasten the door Q. will force the said bolts farther into the nuts V, and thus bind the baling-box more firmly. The bolts T are turned by handles X, formed upon or rigidly attached to them. At the other end of the press the adjacent ends of the'cross-bars R O are connected by hinges Y Z, the upper one, Z, of which is made with a double joint, and the interposed plate a is perforated to receive the bolt b, attached to the inner side of the door Q, so that any sag of the forward part of the door can be taken up by screwing up the nut of the said bolt b. The straps of the hinges Y Z, attached to the cross-bars O, are extended beyond the rear endsof the said cross-bars, and are slotted at their upper edges to receive the latches c, pivoted to the cross-bars H, and which are slotted at their lower edges to engage with the said hinge-straps and thus fasten the angle of the baling-box.
To the inner sides of the projecting vends of the sills A are attached side plates, d, the lower ends of which, or both the lower and upper ends, are flanged to overlap the edges ofthe said sills and thus strengthen the said plates, d, in place. The side plates,d, are thickened, and in them' are formed bearings to receive the gudgeons e, which are attached to the ends ofthe tubular shafts f. To the middle parts of the tubular shafts f are attached by eyebolts or other suitable means the ends of ropes g, the middle parts or loops of which are passed over the projecting ends of the bars L of the follower, so that the said follower will be drawn down to press the matcrial into a bale by turning the tubular shafts f and winding the ropes g upon them.
Upon one end of each tubular shaft f is formed a ratchet-wheel, h, with the teeth of which engages a pawl, i, pivoted to a gearwheel, j, made larger than the ratchet-wheel h, and placed loose upon the gudgeon of the said tubular shaft f. The shank of the pawl i is extended, is made elastic, and rests upon the teeth of the ratchet-wheel h to keep the engaging end of the said pawl down upon the teeth of the said ratchet-wheel.
With the teeth of the gear-wheel j engage the teeth of a gear-segment, k, which is provided with a socket, Z, to receive a lever, m, and which is perforated to receive a pivot, n, formed upon or attached to a projecting part of the side plate, d, or other suitable support.
vThe pivot n is arrangedA outside of and above the tubular shaftf, so that when the lever m is turned up into a vertical position the teeth of the segment k will be thrown out of gear with the gear-wheelj, to allow the rope g to be unwound from the tubular shaft f by raising the follower. 1
When the press is being used, the ratchetwheels h are kept from being turned back by the strain of the ropes g each time the levers m are raised for another stroke by the pawl o, pivoted to the bolt B, or other suitable support. p is a hook attached to the bottom D, or other suitable support, to receive the pawl o and` hold it out of gear with the ratchetwheel h when the follower is being raised.
To the upper ends of the upwardly-extended middle parts of the ends N is journaled a shaft,
q, to which are attached the upper ends of 95 two ropes, r, the lower ends of which are attached to the follower L K, so that the said follower can be raised by turning the said shaft. One of the journals of the shaft q projects, and to it is attached a spoke-wheel, s, the outer ends of the spokes of which are forked to receive the rope t, by means of which the said wheel is operated to turnv the shaft q, wind up the` ropes r, and raise the follower L K.
In using the press the follower L K is raised, sufficient material for a bale is thrown into the baling-box, and the levers m are operated to turn the shafts f, wind up the ropes g, and draw down the follower L K, compressing the said material into a bale. The door Q is then opened, the rear ends of the bale-bands are drawn through between the cross-bars K of the follower, and the bale is bound. The 1evers m are then forced downward, the pawls o are raised and placed upon the hooks p, and the levers m are raised into a vertical position or against the ends of the press, throwing the gear-segments 7c out of gear with the gear-wheels j, and allowing the expansion of the bale to start the follower L K upward, so that it can be quickly drawn up out of the way by operating the rope t, and the bale readily removed from the press.
The upper door, u, of the baling-box is provided with hinges v at one end, and is secured at the other end when closed by a hook, w, or other suitable fastening, so that the said door can be opened for convenience in lling the said baling-box from the floor.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. In a baling-press, the combination, with the sills A. and the follower L K, of the tubu- IOO IIO

2. In a baling-press, the Combination, with the door Q, the upper cross-bar O of the end of the baling -boX, and the doublejointed hinge Z, of the interposed plate a, and the bolt b,attaehed to the said door and passing through the said interposed plate, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the sag of the door can be readily taken up, as set forth.
