To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TULLY RUNKLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmersville, in the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ealing-Presses, ot which the following is a speciiication.

My invention relates to improvements in baling-presses; and it consists in certain novel 1o features, hereinafter described and claimed.

2o mount the outwardly-swirlging doors D, as shown, which, when closed, are held against undue opening by means of a button, latch, or similar device, E. In the ends of the pressbox I form the central vertical slots, F, which 2 5 extend from the top and bottom of the ends to the cross-bars G, secured thereto near the center of the same.- Bearing-boxes l-I are secured to the ends of the press-box at the side edges of the same, and windlasses I are journaled in said bearing-boxes. These windlasses are each provided at one end with a ratchet-wheel, J, which is engaged by the pawl K, pivoted on the press-box. The windlasses are also provided with a series of openings or sockets, L, lfor the reception of levers M in the operation of the device.

N O designate the upper and lower plungers, respectively. They are similar in construction, and are each composed of a series 4o ot transverse plates, P, having their faces all in the same horizontal plane, and the longitudinal bars Q, secured to` said plates. The plates are arranged a slight distance apart, so as to provide the intervening spaces R,

through which the tying-wires are passed to secure the bale after it has been formed in the press. The longitudinal bars have their ends projected through the vertical slots in the ends of the press-box vand provided with 5o the circular shoulders S, behind which are passed the cables T, secured to and passing around the windlasses.

Such being the construction and arrangement of the parts of my improved press, the operation of the same will be readily understood; lVhen it is desired to form a bale of hay, the upper plunger is removed and the lower plunger is lowered to the bottom of the press-box. Hay is then placed in the pressbox, after closing the doors on both sides, until the same is filled, after which the upper plunger is placed in position, the cables properly adj usted, and the windlasses rotated to draw the plun gers together, thereby compressing the hay between them. The doors are now opened and the bale properly bound, after which operation the upper plunger is removed and the bale rolled from the press. The lower plunger is then lowered to the bottom ot' the press-box and the doors closed, and the Vformer operation is repeated.

It will be seen that I have provided a very simple and et'licient press, by which the hay Vcan be readily and rapidly baled.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

The improved baling-press herein described, comprising the box A, having the open sides and closed ends, the latter having slots F, the doors for closing the sides of the box, the windlasses I, one for each end of the box, journaled at the ends ot' the box, the pawl and ratchet for the windlasses, the latter having the openings L for the insertion of the detachable operating-levers M, the two plungers mounted in the press-box and having bars Q, projecting through slots F, and the two sets of cables at opposite ends of the press-box secured to the windlasses, wound in reverse directions thereon, extended outward on each side thereof, and connected to the extended ends of the bars Q, so that each windlass is connected to both plungers, as set forth.
