Bc it known that I, Tmo'rnr S. Srnnm', of Chicago, in the county of Cook and Stato "or" Illinois, have invented a certain new andhnfsefnl Improvement, being a GombincdSleleton"and Upholstered Pillow orCBolster, of which thel following is a speci-,-

The object ofA my invention is lto obtain a light and cheap skeleton pillow and bolsterfor beds; and.

to form a yielding support and .stay therefor, thus.

producing a light, durable, cheap, and healthful pillow oir-bolster, which will retain its elasticity and alord a uniform and gentle yielding surface for thc head. l

` My invention also consists in connecting the outer skeleton or shell and inner supporting-spring or series of springs together and to each other by means ofthe longitudinal stays, in such manner as not only to maintain the symmetry of thc pillow, but alixed rclation to'each other of the inner and outer series of springs, and thereby prevent them from having a tendency to work` toward either end ofthepillow and become collapsed.V

My invention also consists in constructing and arranging the inner series of' springs, or a continuous one, in relation to -the outer, shell or slieletoinand connecting the two together, that one will constitute a longitudinal brace to the other, and thus form, also, a horizontal;counter-brace to cach coil extending from one end ot' the'pillow to the other.

These coils\are reduced in depth as they approach l tlre cnds of ,the frame,in order to give symmetry to thc pillow.-

Nithin the center ot' the shell or web I arrange and secure a system of annular or other-shaped springs, D, which may also be ot' separate and dis tinct coils; but I prefer to make them of. a single continuous spiral-spring, and so. arranged as to forni a junction-with stays (l d, secured'to the top and bottom o'if'thc outer shell or coil, as shown in Figure 1, by a cord forming a lock-loop at the junction of theinner and outer coils andthe stays.

It will'be observed that the inner and outer coils thus arranged would be liable to collapse or fold sidewise toward either cnd of the pillow. I obviate this diiiiculty by causing the inner coils to act as a longitudinal brace to the outer coils, so that cach coil `is made a counter-brace to the other. In the example shown, I effect this bycolling the inner and outer coils spirally in opposite directions, and each set of coils, having independent side-stays,

are also connected to the top and bottom stays and to .each other.

This gives a most perfect longitudinal brace` to the.

skeleton frame ot the pillow from one end to the other, without interfering with its capacity to spring or yield in other directions.

llheV skeleton shell or web thus constructed and braced is covered with'a case, f, composed of two separate and distinct cases, having between them a iilling of cotton, E, or other suitable. upliolsterin'g material, the thickness of which is to protect the springs and give to the pillow vthe proper external softness. l

iLhe coils may be made ot' any steel spring of suitable size to insure the proper degree of elasticity, and they may be arranged in any convenient form, so long as one is within the' other and constitute each a brace to the other. p r

I have represented and described my invention as applied/to a pillow or bolster, but it is obvious that it niayfbc applied to mattresses and beds as well, and with the same results. A

I employ a former, ot' proper shape and construction, upon which to construct the inner and outer coilsof spring; but as this invention will` form the subject ot a separate application it-nced not` be d escribedin this patent.

Having described my invention,
