HEEL-PROTECTOR.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES S. Rantoss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Ithodc Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in I-lcel- Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in heel protectors, and it consists in the combinattons, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.

An object of my invention is to provide a leather covered metal plate which may be secured to the inside of a shoe just above the heel after the shoe is completed or at an time during the course of its wear, and whic 1 will prevent nails from tearing stockings and also from injuring the heel of the wearer, thus reducing the danger of blood poisoning or other ill elfects.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the kind described, which may be cheaply made and which may be readily attached to, or detached from the inner surface of the shoe.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application in which- Figure I is a section through a portion of a shoe showing the manner in which the plate is applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a late constructed according to mv invention, ig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of the plate, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of another form of the device.

In carrying out my invention I provide a late made of any suitable metal such as iron, steel, or brass, and having the general shape of the top surface of the heel. Such a plate is shown at 1 in Fig. 2. This plate is provided along its edges with teeth 2 which are preferably stamped from the same plate of which the body ortion 1 is made, and constitute therefore integral attaching members. In addition to the teeth 2 which are arranged along the edge of the body portion 1 I provide teeth 3 along the front edge of the body portion, these teeth being preferably stamped from the body portion. A tooth 4 which is similar to the teeth 3 is provided in the middle of the body portion.

In the use of this device the teeth 2 are bent upwardly and are arranged to enter a smooth or resilient covering such as a leather insole 5, or a leather or other covering of substantially corresponding size; for securing the plate 1 to the resilient covering. The center tooth 3 and the tooth -l are bent downwardly and when the plate with its covering is placed in a shoe, the do\\'n\vardl v bent teeth are arranged to enter the bottom 6 of the shoe so as to securely hold the plattto the shoe bottom, while the other teeth are bent upwardly to enga e the covering as shown in Fig. 1 of the rawings.

It will thus be seen that I have Provided a plate which will prevent a nail or other fastening device from penetrating through the smooth or resilient covering 5 so as to tear the stocking or injure the heel of the wearer. While I have shown the resilient. covering 5 as an insole arranged to extend over the entire bottom of the shoe it will be understood that this covering may be of a size corresponding with that of the plate and may terminate near the front edge thereof without departing from the invention, so that the covering and plate attached thereto are. disposed above the sole. or heel and anchored by forcing the teeth 3 and 4 into the heel in the manner above specified.

In Fig 3 I have shown a modified form of the protector plate in which the body portion 1* is provided with teeth 2' which are stamped from the body portion inside of the. outer edge of the latter. The. teeth 3" and 4 perform the same function as the teeth 3 and 4 in the form shown in Fig. 2, while, the teeth 2 designed, to be bent upwardly and to enter the resilient covering for securing the latter to the plate. It will be understood that the plate is designed to be shaped to conform with the bottom of the shoe just above the heel. In some shoes this portion is slightly concave so that the plate would be fashioned accordingly, making a plate which is slightly concave on top and convex on its bottom and which fits tightly into the bottom of the shoe.

I claim:

1. A heel protector for shoes, comprising a nail resisting metallic plate conforming substantially in size and shape to the interior of a shoe at the heel, a covering for the plate and terminating adjacent to the forward edge thereof, and oppositely projecting securing means carried by the plate for securing the covering thereto on one side and adapted to enter the bottom of the shoe on the other side to secure the covering and plate in position.

2. The combination with a shoe, of a metal plate conforming to the shape of the heel and disposed above the heel in the bottom of tho shoe, integral teeth carried by the plate, some of said teeth bein' bent downwardly and arranged to enter the bottom of the shoe for securing the plate to the shoe and other of said teeth being bent upwardly, and a covering carried by said plate and receiving the upwardly bent teeth and secured to the late thereby.

3. The combination with ashoe, of a metal plate conforming to the shape of the heel and disposed above the heel in the bottom of the shoe, a series of upwardly projecting teeth bent from the plate on the outer edge thereof, a series of teeth bent from the plate on the front edge thereof, certain of said last-mentioned teeth projecting downwardly and certain thereof projecting upwardly, a tooth bent downwardly from the plate near the middle part thereof. the downwardly bent teeth being arranged to enter the bottom of the shoe for holding the plate to the shoe, and a covering for the plate disposed upon the upper surface of the latter and arranged to receive the upwardl bent teetli, said cover being held in position by said u wardly bent teeth.

4. T e combination with ashoe, of a metal plate conforming to the shape of the heel and dis osed above the heel and the bottom of the s 0e, a series of upwardly projecting integral teethv carried by the plate on the outer curred ed"e thereof, a series of teeth stamped from tie )late on the front edge thereof, certain 02 said teeth projecting downwardly and others projecting upwardly, a tooth stamped from the plate near the middle part thereof and being bent downwardly, the downwardly bent teeth being arranged to enter the bottom of the shoe for holding the plate to the shoe, and a rcsilient covering for the plate disposed upon the upper surface of the latter and arranged to receive the upwardly hent teeth, said covering being held in position by said upwardly bent teeth.

A heel rotector for shoes, comprising a nail-resisting metallic plate conforming in size and shape to the interior of the shoe at the heel, a leather covering for the plate, and oppositely projecting securing means integral with the plate for securing the covering thereto on one side and adapted to enter the bottom of the shoe on the other side.

6. A heel protector for shoes, comprising a nail-resisting plate of concavo-convex form and corresponding in size to the interior of the shoe at the heel, a smooth covoring for the plate, and oppositely projecting teeth bent from the plate, said teeth on one side passing into the covering to permanently secure the same to the plate and the teeth on the other side being adapted to enter the bottom of a shoe to secure the covering and plate in position to prevent penetration of heel nails into the foot JAMES S.
