Description

Filed Fer. 14, 1945 INVENTOR.
. DOHINICK B-CARATOZ-ZOLO- Patented Dec. 3, i946 l I Application This invention relates to sole constructions for More particularly, thei'nven-tion contemplates a new and improved s'ol'e' construction which characterized by an outer sole having a substantially U-shaped marginal recess extending around the 'toe portion and along two sides to the back of the heel.- It is proposed to use a substantially U-shaped recess of the outer sole for engaging over and Clamping the edges of the shoe upper in position.
The invention alsocontemplates the use of a shank piece having a half-moon shaped front end fitted'on the raised portion of the outer sole and extending from the shank area to the .back of the heel. Furthermore, a top shank .piece is fitted around the back portion of said marginal strip from the shank area to the back of the heel.
The invention also contemplates the use of a sole cover piece engaged across the front portion of the marginal strip from the toe area to the shank area.
Still further the invention proposes the construction of a sole as briefly explained, which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a new sole construction for shoes in accordance With this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sole with various pieces separated so that each may be individually seen.
The sole construction for shoes, in accordance with this invention, includes an outer sole I having a substantially U-shaped marginal recess II extended around the toe portion and along the two sides to the back of the heel: A shank piece I2 having a half-moon shaped front end is fitted upon the raised central portion I3 of the outer sole Ill and extends from the shank area to the back of the heel.
A substantially U-shaped marginal strip I I is fitted around the U-shaped recess I I of said outer sole ID. A top shank piece I5 is fitted around the back portion of the marginal strip I4 and extends from the shank area to the back of the February 14, 1M5, Serial-No. 577,738 .5-0 m- 362% a KI..- heelI A ifront cover piece I6 is engaged across the-front portion of the marginal strip I4 from the toe-area to the shankarea. V 1 A small space I! exists between the marginal strip IA and the'face of the recess II of the outer sole I0 into which the edge portions ofthe shoe upper maybe engaged. The parts are secured together in accordance with similar stand- 'ard shoe construction as now practiced.
' *7 This arrangement includes a half-moon" shaped tip-20 formed with the score lines 2 I in the marginal-recess II of the shoe to facilitateflexing of the shoe. I i ....The" dominating feature-0f the invention resides in the fact that the marginal recess II of the outer sole is U-shape. With this arrangement the raised portion I3 extends completely to the back of the heel. Another feature of the invention resides in the fact that the marginal strip I4 is similarly of U-shape.
A still further improved arrangement of the sole resides in the provision of the two shank pieces, namely, the shank piece I2 and the top shank piece I5. The shank piece I2 serves to thicken the back portion of the raised section I3 of the outer sole Ill. The top shank piece I5 engages over the rear half of the marginal strip I4 and the shank piece I2. The front cover base I6 is used to cover the junction of the marginal strip I4 and the raised portion I3.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
l. A sole construction forshoes, comprising an outer sole having a substantially U-shaped marginal recess extending around the toe portion and along the two sides to the back of the heel, a shank piece having a half-moon shaped front edge fitted upon the raised portion of said outer sole and extending from the shank area to the back of the heel, a substantially U-shaped marginal strip fitted around said U-shaped recess of said outer sole, a top shank piece fitted around the back portion of said marginal strip from the shank area to the back of the heel, and a front cover piece engaged across the front portion of said marginal strip from the toe area to the shank area.
2. A sole construction for shoes, comprising an outer sole having a substantially U-shaped marginal recess extending around the toe portion and along the two sides to the back of the heel, a shank piece having a half-moon shaped'front edge fitted upon the raised portion of said outer sole and extending from the shank area tothe back of the heel, a substantially U-shaped marginal strip fitted around said U-shaped recess of said outer sole, a top shank piece fitted around the back portion of said marginal strip from the shank area to the back of the heel, and a front cover piece engaged across the front portion of' i said marginal strip from the toe area to the shank area, said outer sole having a raised, portion defined by said marginal recess.
3. A sole construction for shoes, comprising an outer sole having a substantially U-shaped marginal recess extending around the toe -portionand along the two sides to the back of the heel, ashank'piece having a ha1fmoon shaped front edge fittedupon thezraised portion of said outer sole and extending from the shank area to the back of the heel, a substantially U-shapedmarginal strip fitted around said U-shaped recess of said outer sole, a top shank piecefitted around the backportion of said marginal strip from the shank area :to the back of the heel, and a front cover piece engaged across the front portion of said marginalstripfromthe toe area to the shank area, said top shank piece being engaged across the back section of said marginal strip and top face of said half moon shaped shank piece.
4. A sole construction'for shoes, comprising an cover piece engaged across the front portion of said marginal strip from the toe area to the "shank area, said front cover piece serving to cover the adjacent edges of said raised portion and said marginal strip.
5. A sole construction for shoes, comprising an outer sole having a substantially U-shaped marginal recess extending around the toe portion and along the two sides to the back of the heel, a shank piece having a half-moon shaped'front edge fitted upon the raised portion of said-outer sole and extending from the shank area to the back of the heel, a substantially U-shaped mar- .ginal strip fitted around said U-shaped recess of said outer sole, .a top shank -piece fitted around the back portion of said marginal strip from the shank area to the back of theheel, and a front cover piece engaged across the front portion of said marginal strip from the toe area to the shank area, said front cover piece having'a rear tip which engages over the front edge'of said top shank piece.
